AN EXPANSION POLICY PROBABLE.

ALTERATION MOOTED IN UNION STEAM SHIP SERVICES. Recent announcements indicate that the Union Steam Ship Company is about to launch out on a policy of expansion, which will include the Wellington-Lyttelton ferry service. It is understood that a new transpacific vessel will soon be in course of construction and that an order will probably be placed for a new vessel, somewhat larger than the Wahine, to go on the ferry run. In conversation with an official associated with the Union Company, who was recently in Melbourne, a “Star” reporter was informed that it was probable that the Niagara would be taken off the Sydney-VancouVer run and transferred to the Sydney-San Francisco trip, to assist the Tahiti. Sir Charles Holdsworth, managingdirector of the Union Company, who was in the Dominion last year, is making a personal investigation of the possibilities of a new and up-to-date vessel, embodying all the principles of the latest and fastest oil-burners in passengers services for the transpacific route, and that is the main reason of his present visit to England. What will happen to the vessel taken off the**ferry service is not yet known, neither is it known what vessel will be affected.
