RICCARTON ROADS.
To the Editor. Sir,--In Saturday's Riccarton Records, the Mayor of Riccarton is reported as being grieved because others endeavour to secure praise for work accomplished by the council. Just how Mr Manhire arrives at this conclusion is difficult to understand. Has the council done anything for which it has not been given credit? The one and only thing done by the present council is fully appreciated by the very few who benefit by reduced heating charges for electricity. Although the Riccaiton Citizens’ Association suggested a reduction it does not claim to have accomplished the reduction. Mr Manhire seems to delight to speak on this same subject whenever possible. Perhaps it is the start and finish of his own line of thought. Councillor Gudsell (works chairman) is now going to patch the roads —of course, where there, is road left to patch. For he and the Mayor to cite Riccarton roads as being as good as most others ‘is absurd. Christchurch is re making roads recently sewered, and these will not be much damaged by cross work to houses. Such damage is covered by a fee in each case. Since the ratepayers “ downed ” the water scheme, the council seems to have gone out of business, excepting, perhapSj for the purchase of a tractor to draw the water cart, which still fails to water the side streets. In conclusion, I would congratulate the council or the brainy individual who thought of the dangerous “ traffic mounds ” at most of the intersections. —I am, etc., MORE WORK—LESS TALK.
