STEAMERS NARROWLY AVOID BAD SMASH.
CLOSE SHAVE IN COOK STRAIT FRIGHTENS MANY PASSENGERS. (Special to the “Star.”) BLENHEIM, February 3. Passengers by the Tamahine from Wellington this evening report an exceedingly narrow escape from collision with the Maunganui in Cook Strait. The Maunganui, for Sydney, and the Tamahine, for Picton, left Wellington at approximately the same time. The Tamahine overtook and passed the Maunganui in Wellington harbour and then slowed up at the heads. The Maunganui is stated to have come up at high speed, passed the Tamahine and cut across her bows. The Tamahine was sent full speed astern in the nick of time. The ships were so close that the Tamahine virtually touched the Maunganui’s patent log, which was trailing astern. The incident happened off Tom’s Rock. Both vessels had a full complement of passengers. It is reported that the Tamahine’s officers secured sworn statements from the passengers as to the facts in anticipation of an inquiry.
