wrought in the well-known coastal steamer Kotare, which traded between Dunedin and Invercargill for many years. No longer is she a cargo vessel, for her capacious hold has been converted into a dining-saloon and sleeping accommodation is provided for forty people under the decks. The bunks are arranged in double tiers, are roomy arid easily accessible, while there is plenty of space for storing luggage. The vessel is electrically lit throughout, having her own dynamos. The din-ing-saloon is well lit during the day by means of an extensive skylight, the windows of which can also be opened to let in fresh air. A large awning covers the skylight, and the deck, thus affording ample protection from sun, rain or wind. Everything on deck has been made spick and span, with the appointments resembling those of a yacht. There is a salt, water shower, fresh water basins, storage tanks for fresh water, and all other possible conveniences. Nothing has escaped attention, and the painting, polishing and refurnishing have given the vessel a very smart appearance. Indeed, those who consider that. oughly comfortable for passengers will have to change their minds if they inspect the Kotare. She will shortly set out from Invercargill on a trip to Milford Sound, and on her return will take a house part)' to see the Sanders Cup The Union Company report that the Hauraki, with Pacific Coast cargo, cleared San Francisco on January 28 for Auckland, Wellington, Sydney, Melbourne and Adelaide. She is due at Auckland about February 19. Waiotapu was to leave Auckland yesterday for Wellington, to continue discharge of her Pacific Coast cargo, and is due there to-morrow. The Federal Company advise that the Cambridge will leave Auckland to-day for "Wellington, in continuation of her voyage from Liverpool. The vessel is due there on Monday morning. The New Zealand Shipping Company report that the Cumberland left New Plymouth on Wednesday for Wanganui roadstead and Wellington, to continue loading. The vessel is due at Wellington on February 13, and will proceed from there to Port Chalmers, to fill up. The Cumberland will sail finally from Port Chalmers on February 22 for LonTJNIQUE MOTOR SKIP. The Blue tunnel Line motor ship Dnlius, which was due at Sydney on January 26, is unique. She is driven by a combination of oil and steam, which causes considerable economy in oil fuel consumption. The Dolius was built four years ago by the Scott Shipbuilding and Engineering Company, of Greenock, the oldest British ship-building firm, and the combination of oil and steam is this firm’s own invention. The Dolius is worked by a ScotJ-Still engine, consisting of two sets of fourcylinder engines. The engine is worked by oil on the down stroke and steam on the up-stroke. The steam is generated by the waste gases from the motor side. About 15 per cent of the total power of the engines comes from the steam, w'hich otherwise would go to waste up the funnel. The Dolius is 8000 tons deadweight, and can steam at an average speed of 111 knots, consuming about 8J tons of oil a day, instead of 10 or 11 of oil in the average motor ship. A new freighter, the Eurybates, has recently been built and fitted with motors acting on the some principle, and is now undergoing her trials. MIDDLESEX AT AUCKLAND. The New Zealand Shipping Company advise that the Middlesex, after putting out explosives in the powder ground at Auckland, on Wednesday, commenced discharge of her general cargo from London.
