SCHOOL PICNIC. On Friday next the annual picnic of St. Albans School will be held at the Amberlev Domain. A special train will leave Christchurch at 8.45 a.m., arriving at Amberley 10.15 a.m. The committee will provide hot water, tea, sugar, milk and soft drinks. Fuller particulars are advertised in this column. ROAD MAINTENANCE. Council employees were busily en gaged in the early part of the week tar-sealing Edgeware Road from Springfield Road to Colombo Street. Residents have expressed the hope that the worst of the footpaths will be top-dressed before winter, having in mind their experiences of last year. Springfield Road, which was tar-sealed a few months back, is now in splendid condition. ST. ALBANS SCHOOL BATH. and many people have expressed disappointment that the bath was not available; in fact, some stated that the committee were losing a good opportunity of augmenting the school funds. Last season the. bath was leased to the St. Albans Swimming Club, but that body has gone out of existence. The closing of the bath has meant the exclusion of individuals who would have appreciated a dip during the recent hot weather, and would have willingly paid for the privilege. Upon representations being made to the Committee, it has been decided to consider the- question at the general meeting next Wednesday of throwing open the bath to the public. RECHABITE TENT. On Wednesday evening a well-attend-ed meeting of the Ark of Refuge Tent was held at Wesley School, Edgeware Road. Sister R. E. Martin presided, and gave a hearty welcome to Bro Dwight, of the Linwood Tent. A candidate was proposed for membership and a claim was made for sick pay. Bro W. Anderson was elected as a delegate to the Provincial Council. The Secretary was authorised to prepare the annual syllabus. Bro A. Genet, an old member, was presented by Bro A. Martin. D.D.C.R., with a shaving mirror, and reference was made to the service rendered to the Tent. It was resolved that the remits to be brought before the District Council be discussed at next meeting. Pleasure was expressed that Bros Bryant and Postgate had returned after a visit to America. A pleasant hour was spent in amusements, followed by supper. PERSONAL. Mr and Mrs J. E. Thwaites, School Road, have returned from a motor trip, which included a visit to Franz Joseph Glacier. Mrs R. Hill and family, Abberley Road, have- returned from Dunedin. Miss Doris Hassall, of the Elmwood School, has returned to St. Albans after spending five weeks’ holiday in New South Wales. SHIRLEY SCHOOL BATH. That the new bath is fulfilling a longfelt want in the district is evidenced by the attendances since the. bath was completed. Shirley is fortunate in having several very fine swimmers in its midst, who are quite willing to give their time and experience to benefit the children. Chief of these is Mr F. Stokes, who instructs the childres in swimming and life-saving. SHIRLEY SCHOOL BATII COMMITTEE. A meeting of the committee was held last Monday. Present: Messrs C. S. Thompson (chairman), Weir, Salt, Imeson, Knowles, Stanley, M’Kinley! Collins, Anderson, Hunt, Sandford, and C. H. Burson (hon. secretary). Mr Sandford reported that he would have the following sideshows available for the official opening:—Bran tub, Aunt Sally, dart board, pegs, balloon bursting. It was decided to set up a subi committee to assist Mr Sandford. The I official opening day was fixed for FebI ruan r 25. at 2.30 p.m. To all subscribers of £1 and over to the bath funds it was decided to give a family ticket for the remainder of the season and the whole of next season, the family ticket to comprise father, mother and children under 16 on October 1, 1928.
