NETHER GARMENT OF DETEtmVE WAS TORN.

Disaster overtook the nether garment of Detective Studholme yesterday, when, with a constable, he wtl effecting the arrest of William Edward Pinching. The result was that Pinching appeared at the Magistrate's Court this morning before Mr H. A. Young. S.M., and in addition to the original charge of being in arrears in the maintenance of his wife and child, he was charged with wilfully damaging the trousers of Lindsay Studholme, the damage being assessed at £2. “ We arrested accused, and he made a bolt for it,” said Detective Studholitie. ”We chased him. and after a run I got hold of the back of his coat. He then tried to break away, and gava a twist that sent me over. I fell on my knee and my trousers were torn.” The garment, produced, showed a rent in the knee. “ You slipped yourself. I didn't do it,” said accused. “ You threw me down when you tried to twist out of my grip,” said tha detective. “ I didn’t, but I suppose it's no usa arguing.” replied accused. The two pounds claimed were awarded. in default seven days’ imprisonment. On the maintenance charge accused was remanded to appear at Gisborna on January 5.
