W.E.A. SUMMER CAMP STARTS AT METHVEN.
A party of fifty students with their tutors arrived at Methven on Monday. The day was gloriously fine, which greatly assisted to give the party a good impression of this district. In the afternoon Professor Shelley addressed the students on “ The Contact of Western Civilisation with Primitive Cultures.” He also welcomed the new students to the school, and in doing so impressed the need of giving their own ideas on the matter under discussion, because it was only in expression that real education was achieved. 'ln the evening Professor Shelley read the'- play “ Shadow of a Gunman ” (Sean O’Casey), Dr Beeby introduced a psychological test and the concert committee was responsible for an impromptu concert.
The main lecture programme commenced on Tuesday, when Professor Shelley approached the subject of the contact of cultures from the anthropological point of view, and introduced some of the biological and psychological difficulties involved. He was followed by Mr Lloyd Ross, M.A., of Dunedin, who explained the economic tauses that made for the decline of empires in the past, especially in relation to the contact of races. In the evening Professor Shelley* spoke about the works of Eugene O’Neill, the American piay writer, and read part of his “ Marco Millions.” in which he uses historic material to exemplarise the outlook of the world in 1927.
