CRICKET.

CANTERBURY BEATS WEST COAST TEAM. Per Press Association. GREYMOUTH, December 28.. Tl\e cricket match between the West. Coast and Canterbury was concluded to-day in showery weather, Canterbury winning by three wickets, largely due to the good batting stand by Woods and the bright display by Boon. - West Coast resumed with four down for 27. M’lntosh went at 79 and Barlow at 63. Casey and Adams had added 32 when the latter was caught by Rix off F. Woods, after making 62 by careful play and holding up his wicket from the start of the innings. Casey then pasted the bowling and hit up 57, being the chief factor in taking the Coast score to within a couple of that in the first innings. Rix was the most effective bowler. The dampness gave Cunningham no foothold, though he bowled attractively. Before lunch Canterbury had lost one for 9, and had on 66 before the second wicket fell. Boon hit six boundaries. Woods went in at 107 and saw 90 runs added, making 72 of them himself, including seven boundaries. Casey was the most effective bowler, sending down twenty overs for 31 runs and-three wickets. Revell also bowled with variety. Scores:— WEST COAST. First innings 159 Second Innings. Per Press Association. WELLINGTON, December 28. The second round of the New Zealand City and Suburban Cricket Association's tournament, for the Walker Shield was continued in sultry weather, to-day, when Auckland met Canterbury. The northerners who defeated Wellington, the present holders, on Monday and Tuesday again demonstrated their superiority by decisively outplaying Canterbury. To-day Canterbury had first use of the wicket, but made a feeble stand against R. Burton's slow off-breaks, which accounted for five wickets at a cost of twenty-eight runs. Kerr (slow left, hander) kept the other end going steadily," his tally being two for 34. The innings closed for 99 runs. Langford (34) and Stammers (28) being the only batsmen to show a semblance of form. The Aucklanders played much brighter cricket. On going to the wickets A. Gedye and W. Badley gave their side an excellent start by putting on 77 for the first picket. Gedye rattled on 101 in eighty minutes, six sixes and ten fours figuring in his dashing display. The Canterbury bowling was weak and W. Fletcher, A. Turner and C. Watts also took toll of it before the innings closed for 262. Gordon and Robertson had to bear the brunt of the attack and they plugged away determinedly in the heat, being <rerwarded with three wickets apiece while Gray, one-time Canterbury representative, also did respectably with the ball. With a leeway of 163 runs to make up Canterbury again fared badly in their second Innings, Langford again being the only man to show confidence. When stumps were drawn at 6.30 p.m. seven wickets were down for 106 runs. A. Watts, Kerr, Martin and R. Burton came out with flattering bowling figures, but they were lucky. Auckland seem to be assured of the shield as Canterbury still require 57 runs to avoid an innings defeat and have only three wickets in hand. To show how slow the scoring was in Canterbury’s second innings, it need only be stated, that Besley was at the wickets for seventy minutes for his score of 13 not out. The match will be concluded to-morrow.
