Captain Kingsford Smith took off at 8.32 i a.m. for an endurance flight. The machine ran 2500 feet down the runway and took the air after 35 seconds. Visibility was excellent, with a mild breeze rising later. At noon the “ Spirit of California ” had been up over three hours and a half when Captain Smith sent a radio message saying that all was satisfactory.
