GREATEST DESIRE OF CHURCH HAS BEEN REFUSED.
REJECTION OF NEW PRAYER BOOK RAISES MOMENTOUS ISSUES.
“The links which bind Church and State in England are so close in history, law and sentiment, that it was worth a great effort to find some means of retaining the connection without endangering the spiritual liberty of the Church. And for some years the experiment had seemed a remarkable success. Now, on the most important issue of all, the Church haa been refused her desire,” said Bishop West Watson, speaking at the Cathedral last evening on the rejection of the new Prayer Book. “ I ask your prayers and sympathy at this time for the leaders of our church in the Homeland, and especially for the Bishops and the Archbishop of Canterbury,” he said. “The rejection of the revised Prayer Book, the result, of some twenty years of care and prayer, back-, ed as it was by such majorities of all three Houses in the Na tional Assembly, raises issues which may be of momentous importance.”
“ Of the form which the revision has taken I wish to say nothing," continued the Bishop. “ That subject has been amply debated and the Church at Home has expressed its mind, rightly (as I think), or wrongly. But there are two matters which I should like to lay
