TUG-OF-WAR EVENT WILL BE DECIDED IN BARRACKS.
Keen competition is assured at the New Zealand championship tug-of-war tournament, to be held in the King Edward Barracks next week, commencing on Monday night. Numerically and in the point of quklity the entries are excellent and some hard struggles should be witnessed. The organisation of the tournament has been in good hands, and the events will be supervised by officials of the New Zealand Athletic and Cycling Union, so that the public should be well catered for. There are over thirty entries, including such first-class teams as Woolston, Enfield and Timaru, and the various pulls will, no doubt, be hard for the competitors and exciting for the onlookers, ft is certain that the team which gets through will thoroughly deserve the honour, for it will be no walk-over. Each team will have two lives, and there will be strenuous endeavours on the part of the competitors to avoid any defeat.
During the progress of the tug-of-war tournament variety will be lent to the evening's entertainment by a troupe cf Maoris from Temuka. Their offering will be songs, poi dances and hakas. In previous appearances they have earned high praise. A good number of side shows will be another feature. Holiday-makers will find diversion in the excursions to Chocolate Alley and other parts of Sidesliowland. A musical programme will also be given.
