SCOTLAND BEATS WARATAHS, 10 TO 8.
AUSTRALIANS SLIP ON FROSTY GROUND. By Telegraph.—Press Assn-—Copyrjgl t. A us. and N.Z. Cable Association. LONDON. December 17. Scotland defeated the New South Wales Rugby footballers by ten points to eight. An exciting match, watched by 50,000 people, resulted in the. Waratails’ first defeat in international games. Their combination and clever and resourceful attack and defence were spoilt by Scotland’s very fast forward work and quick following up. Simmers, in great form, led up to both of Scotland's tries. After a run he punted over Ross's head. Graham getting up to score a try, Drysdale converting. Scotland were level three minutes after Lawton had converted Ford’s try. Twenty-five minutes later Simmers cross-Uicked, Welsh gathering and going over. Drysdale placed the goal. The Waratahs finished strongly, and groat attacks ended in Jack Ford scoring a clever try. Lawton’s kick was only a yard wide. Two stoppages in this half were not allowed for by the referee. The Waratahs were going strong when the whistle sounded, and might have saved the match had the time lost been played. Still, on the play, Scotland were the better side. They showed safer handling and better footwork among the forwards, who held their own in the scrummages and line-outs. The Waratahs were probably handicapped by the frost-bound ground. The}* made many slips when near the line, Wallace twice coming down. The Waratahs, however, with the ground difficult to turn on, should have exploited the short forward punt more.
