CENTRAL GALA. A meeting of the Gala Committee wa "held oil Tuesday evening. An apolog: was received for the absence of th» chairman, Mr A. W. Owles. Mr Gam bie was voted to the chair. The Spac< and Rights Committee reported the cir cumstances that had arisen in connec tion with application for space and it' action in withdrawing the letter sen to the Borough Council for the use o the foreshore for January 14 was ap proved. The action of the committet in dealing with the programme was also approved. A letter was received from the Coun cil inviting the Committee to attend i meeting for the purpose of discussing gala matters. A deputation was ap pointed to wait upon the Council or Monday evening. The Christchurch Tramway Board wrote agreeing to the usual concession for gala day. The next meeting of the Committee was fixed for Tuesday next at S p.m. SURF CLUB. A meeting of the committee of the New Brighton Surf Club was held on Tuesday evening. Mr T. S. Taylor presided. Messrs Cooper and Collins were appointed examiners for surf medallions. It was decided to present each boy of the winning Benson Shield team with a medal this season. The competition for the Millar and Fox Cups will be held to-morrow at 10.30 a.m. The officials for these events are: Judges, Messrs L. C. Matson, F. L. Collins; referee, Mr T. G. Fox; time-keepers, Messrs J. Browne* and H. Throp. It was decided to notify the headmaster of the New Brighton School that boys attending the school would be given free membership of the club provided they underwent a course of instruction in life-saving. BEACH INSPECTORS. The following members of the New Brighton Surf Club were sworn in as beach inspectors for 1927-28 on Tuesday evening by the Mayor, Mr A. W. Owles: G. S. Jarvis, R. Wilkinson, R. Wheeley, C. Cooper, 11., Throp, J. Broome, J. Britton, A. J. Hughes, W. M Dowell, L. C. Matson, C. Smith, T. Marker, L. Tosswill, E. A. Owles, L. W. Hudson, J. M’Creanor, and F. S* Taylor. BERESFORD CLUB. The prize-winners at the Beresford Club’s weekly euchre and dance on Monday evening were; Miss Parsons, Mrs Parsons, Mrs Rose, Mr L. Nankerville, Mr Bloom, and Mr S. Jones. EUCHRE PARTY. Another successful euchre and dance was held on Wednesday evening at the South Hall. The following were the prize-winners: Mrs H. Robinson and Mr J. Robinson. TEMPERANCE UNION. The annual meeting of the Young People's Christian Temperance Union was very well attended. Mrs T. Mitchell presiding. A resume of the year’s work given by the secretary showed that there are now 51 members on the roll. The treasurer’s statement showed a good credit balance. The president thanked the retiring officers for their work during the year. The following officers were elected: President, Mrs F. Mitchell; vice-presi-dents, the Revs J. S. Young and R. Raine, Mr Edwin Scott and Miss Enid Langley; secretary, Mr Wilfred Sherlock; treasurer. Miss Ena Diehl. Press reporter, Mr Will Langford. Three new members were initiated and supper was served. METHODIST CHURCH. The presentation of prizes and the anniversary tea and concert was held on Monday evening at the South Hall. There was a good attendance at both functions. There are now 50 children attending the Sunday school on Sunday morning. Great credit is due to Mr A. E. La wry, superintendent of the Sunday school. The Rev Raine thanked Miss Weaver and Miss Grammer in the way they had trained the smaller children. Every child in the primary classes received a book, while the older ones received prizes for memory work and diplomas for Scripture examination. At the close of the evening small presensations were made to Miss Grammer, Mrs Lewis and Mr A. E. Lawry. NORTH BEACH NOTES. BOROUGH WORK. The weekly meeting of the North Beach Gala Committee was held on Saturday evening. Mr F. J. L. Scott reported on the conference with the New Brighton Gala Committee regarding side shows, and Messrs Scott and Hodgson were appointed to represent North Beach on the deputation to the New r Brighton Borough Council. A report of the meeting of shopkeepers held to consider attractions for Christmas Eve was received, and the Gala Committee undertook to do all they could to assist. It was decided to hold over the matter of tenders for stalls until some finality was arrived at regarding the side shows. An offer to run a merry-go-round at the gala was accepted. It was resolved that the prize for the tug-ofwar competition should be a challenge cup', and that a medal should be awarded to each member of the winning team. Messrs Scott and Johnston w r ere. empowered to purchase the challenge cup. PERSONAL. The Rev W. F. Knowles, of the Esplanade, has left for Hokitika. Constable J. Corrish, who has resided at Baker Street for some three vears, has been transferred to Papanui.” Residents regret losing this family from the district, and wish Mr and Mrs Corrish and family every success and happiness in their new home. Alan Freeborn, who won the dux at the North Beach School, .is only eleven 3 T ears old.
