LABOUR FAVOURS SURTAX ON INCOMES.

SHOULD BE USED FOR DEBT REDUCTION, MR SNOWDEN THINKS. By Telegraph.—Press Assn.—Copyright. Aus. and N.Z. Cable Association. LONDON, December 14. The Parliamentary Labour Party adopted a resolution in favour of a surtax of two shillings in the potmd on •all unearned incomes over £3OO per annum. The scheme has been much discussed in recent months. The resolution instructs the executive of the party to have the proposals placed vigorously before the country.

Mr Philip Snowden favours the surtax being used for debt reduction, but many others in the Labour Party desire it to be available for social services, believing that the tax will bring in £50,000,000 per annum, though Mr Snowden is doubtful if it will yield so much. The “Daily Herald” in supporting the scheme, says that only 200,000 people will be liable to the surtax. “These people can pay,” the paper says, “and it is right that they should be made to pay. They must be made to pay.”
