SCHOOL AND PLAYGROUND.

CRICKET. Trial Games. Trial games are being arranged for next Saturday and, for the present, the bo3*s concerned will be divided into two sections (senior and junior). Next Saturday the senior trial game will take place at Hospital Corner No. 6, whilst the junior game is to be played at Hospital Corner No. 7. The following boys have been selected to take part in the senior trial. The teams will be selected on the ground and each club or school must provide sufficient material for its own players:—R. B. Fifth Grad©. The final of the fifth grade knockout competition was played last Saturday, when Technical A met School B at the Hospital Corner ground. Technical A batted first and, although their opening was rather slow, a vigorous knock of 56 by F. T. J. French assisted by a useful 26 by F. Wise brought the total to 124 runs for five wickets, when the innings was declared. J. S. M'Reman, 15, also gained double figures. For School B the most successful with the ball was D. W. Benson, two for IS. School B also commenced patchilv, hut then E. R. Hounsell got to work and went for the bowling in fine style. However, when he had notched an attractive 35 and the total stood at 54, he was bowled by Blackabv, and a change came in the complexion of the game, several wickets falling in quick succession, and the innings closing for 92. B. Ayres 14 and D. W. Benson 12 not out also reached double figures. Technical won by 32 runs on the first innings.

SIXTH GRADE.

As St Bede’s and St Andrew’s both withdrew after the first round of the sixth grade knock-out competition, the game which was played at Ensor’s Road last Saturday between School A and Technical constituted the final of

the grade. The home team took first knock. B. Barnes carried his bat for a Ftvmd 51 not out, in a total of 137. Cr. ( arpenter 19, L. Marshall 17, and T. Bird 10. also secured double figures, whilst for Boys’ High School A. E. J. Harris, four for 39, W. M. Brown, three for 51, and T. Armstrong, two for 19, accounted for the Technical wickets. School A, at one time, looked like going cheaply, but careful batting by M. Cooper 23, E. Brunton 22 not out, E. Hay 18 not out, and C. Thorne 17. saw time batted out with one wicket in

hand and 125 runs scored. The game being drawn, a result was obtained by finding the average runs per wicket, thus giving School A a win by 13.89 to 13.70. Two bowlers, G. Carpenter and R. Puddle, bowled unchanged for Technical and the performance of the latter in taking seven wickets for 48 was a good one. G. Carpenter’s figures were two for 57. « :: SEVENTH A GRADE. The semi-finals were decided in the seventh A grade last Saturday. Tech* nical A beating School A, whilst St Bede’s A were victorious in their game against Riccarton. The former game was played at Ensor’s Road, School A batting first and being dismissed for the poor total of 21. L. Henwood, five for 7, and E. E. Grenfell three for 9, bowled best for Technical A, who declared with nine wickets down for 124. The Technical

zie 15* not out, M. J. Moriarty 14). R. Goldstonc six for 30. F. Wilson three for 12. and L. lienwood one for 0, took the wickets for Technical A, who won by an innings and four runs. Playing at Northcote, Riccarton were first at the wickets in their game against St Bede’s A. With the exception of Cornish, who scored a useful 20. the batting was rather weak and the innings closed for 50 runs. E. Kean four tor S, O. Scully three for 25. and H. Armstrong three for 14, shared the wickets for St Bede’s A. who replied with 150. S. Tres- — on 43 > was top scorer, whilst L. M Mcnamin 22, C. Ward 22, O. Scully 20. and 11. Armstrong 10, also helped the total along, St Bede's A securing a win by 100 runs on the first innings. The final between Technical A and St Bede’s A is set down to be played at Hospital Corner Xo. 5 next Saturday.

SEVENTH B GRADE. The semi-finals were also contested in the seventh B grade last Saturday, Grammar A defeating Technical B, whilst Linwood B were successful in their match against St Andrew’s B. Technical B took first knock against Grammar A, but their batsmen did not show much form, and the side was all out for 53 (J. Withell 17 and R. Gibbard 14). \V. Blunden, seven for 15. and R. If. Hudson, three for 37. divided the wickets for Grammar A. who rc-

plied with 100 (R. White 28, R If. D Hudson 26 and \V. Blunden 16) F«.r Technical B. the most successful with the ball were L. Bench, four for 15. and A. Bedding ton, three for 20. Technical

B. in their second innings, did much better, scoring 139. J. Withell notched a sound 73. whilst W. Ilannigan. 22 not out, A. Roddington 10 and A. Milne 10 also made double figures. It, IT. IX Hudson, seven for 33. and r?. Dyer, three for 51. the f wickets for Grammar A. who gained a win by 53 runs on the first innings. No details have been received concerning the match between St Andrews B and Linwood P In this game, which was plaved at S'rowan, Linwood R took first knock and registered 124. to which score St Andrew's B replied with 100 Linwood B therefore won the game by 24 runs on the first inning*. As Grammar A could not play next Saturday, it has bem arranged to play the' final lx*tween Grammar A and Linwood B this afternoon at the Hospital corner ground.
