PAPANUI PROGRESS LEAGUE DISCUSSES DISTRICT AFFAIRS.
A meeting of the Papanui Progress League was held at the Papanui building last night. Mr W. J. Boyce presided and there was a good attendance of members. A resolution of sympathy was carried to Mr R. Rickerby in the loss of his wife. A discussion took place on a letter refusing the league’s request for earlier Sunday trams. Mr W. G. Chapman pointed out that the Railway Department had shown itself adaptable to the needs of the public by altering the time-table on Sundays. The Tramway Board, on the other hand, refused to be moved. Other speakers spoke of the way the tramway policy was out of touon with the public, and it was decided to ask the Tramway - Board to run an early service for a three months' trial. It was decided to ask the City Council to expedite the work at the site of the proposed children’s playground at St James’s Park. A committee, comprising the chairman, secretary, and Messers E. Barnard and E. Worsdell. was set tip to meet representatives of the council in the inspection of the nuisances at St John Street. It was decided to write to Dr Telford expressing thanks for his refusal to allow the Papajiui channelling loan to be proceeded with without consulting the ratepayers. The Waimairi and City Councils were asked to put the roads on the Bryndwr Papanui bus route in order. Mr S. H. Cox stated that he had written to Mr J. Wood asking for a reduction in the fares over the new bus service. lie had suggested 4dd for the cash fare to Bligh’s Road and 3s 9d for the concession cards.
