Soldiers are patrolling the streets of Nagy-Varad, following serious riots, in which students from Jassy and Bucharest destroyed the editorial offices and printing presses of Hungarian newspapers and private residences, including the Chief Rabbi’s. They fatally stabbed an Hungarian actor and seriously wounded an hotel proprietor. The citizens are remaining indoors and the shops are shut. Nagy-Varad was formerly in Hunfary, but has been annexed by Rumania. Jassy, a Rumanian town, has only of recent years become* modernised. It has a large university, a School of Music and a School of Art. Nagy-Varad, a city, was formerly in Hungary, and is situated 137 miles from Bucharest. It has a fortress, which is now used as a barracks. The city is also known as Grosswardein, and is very progressive. It has two fine cathedrals, two episcopal palaces, a new theatre and Town Hall, and is a centre of learning, having a Royal Academy of Law and many other high educational edifices. It was one of the oldest towns in Hungary, dating back to the middle of the eleventh century, and its traditions and people are almost wholly Hungarian. It was annexed, with other territory, to Rumania following the war.
