Dr and Mra P, W. Hilgendorf, Lincoln College, returned to Christchurch 3'esterday from Wellington. Mrs and Mrs Theo Barker, Fendalton, will leave to-day for the Rak&ia Huts, where they will spend a short holiday. Mrs Bowman, of Coopers Creek, and her daughters, Mesdames Body and Piner, are at present staying at "Bathgate House,” Rotorua. Mr and Mrs L. B. Beal, Wellington, will be the guests of Mr and Mrs C. M. Ollivier, Murray Aynslcy's Hill, for the race week festivities. Miss Molly Ford will leave Christchurch this evening, en route for Sydney, where she will spend an extended holiday. The engagement is announced of Miss Zeta Eileen Hurley, daughter of Mr and the late Mrs C. Hurley, Nelson, to the Rev Harold Prank Ault, son of Mr and Mrs P. W. Ault, St Albans, Christchurch. An application from Miss A. L. Partridge for six months’ leave of absence from February 1, 1928, on account of ill-health, was acceded to at last night's meeting of the Technical College Board of Governors, and it was decided that the board's best wishes be conveyed to her for early restoration to health. On Saturday evening a surprise party visited the home of Mrs Minchall, Richardson Street, Opawa. A pleasant evening was spent in games, bompetitions, dancing, etc. Those present were: Mesdames Minchall, Hoddinott, Suter, Carter, Hoods and Beggs, Misses M. Bartlett, M. Bennett, I. Tinley, R. Stokes, D. Hoddinott, I. Suter, M. Beggs, V. Harris, K. Harris, M. Webb, T. Patterson, Messrs W. Minchall, R. Garland, W. Switzer, B. Kalin, J. Bell, A. Hodgson, H. Carter, A. Beggs, E. Hancox, N. Hoddinott, R. Hoddinott. The Christchurch Community of Girl Citizens held a community gathering this week at which eighty girls were present in the Y.W.C.A. club room. The ceremony included the enrolment of fifteen new citizens. Mr Gordon Troup then gave an address on the subject of “ Pioneers,” and pointed out the special contribution which women of this age had to give to men by their vitality and their readiness to encourage ideas. An impromptu speech, interclub contest was held. Miss Edith Petrie and Mr Troup acted as judges. The Pathfinder and Ta Reka sections produced the best results.

A special feature of the Coster ball to be held next Monday at the Caledonian Hall, will be numbers to be given by members of the Touch and Go Company. These items, as their titles denote, are well in keeping with the character of the ball. “ The Festive Mrs ’Awkins,” Albert Chevalier's famous coster classic, will be sung by Mr Bernard Rennell with a supporting chorus. Mrs Guy Cotterill will interpret “Alice’s ’Ouse.” A quintette consisting of Miss Betty Cotterill, Messrs Stephen Lester. Bernard Rennell, Arthur Bower and Guy Cotterill will sing, “ There’s a Trick in Pickin’ a chick, Chick, Chicken.” The monthly meeting of the North Brighton Young People’s Christian Temperance Union was held at Mrs Leaver’s residence, when Mrs Eames presided over a good attendance. The treasurer's report was adopted. Jt was reported that a temperance demonstration was to be held in November and it was decided that the union should take part. One new member was initiated. Miss B, M. Harband was welcomed to the meeting and spoke on the aims and motto of the union. A vote of thanks was accorded to Miss Harband. Supper was provided by Mrs Leaver. A coming-of-age party was held recently at the residence of Mr and Mrs J. Teale, Marriot’s Road, North Brighin honour of the coming of age of their eldest son, Robert. A dainty supper was served in a marquee, the centre of attraction being a birthday cake decorated with twenty-one kewpies. The toasts were proposed by Messrs J. Teale, J. Keltie and D. Meyer. The evening passed pleasantly with games, songs and dancing. Included among the guests were: Mr and Mrs J. Teale, Mr and Mrs Hill, Mr and Mrs Sands, Misses Myra and Elsie Russell, Ivy and Ethel Bax, Edna and Grace King, Laurel and Betty Blair, Madge and Daisy Hill, Kate Meyer, Pearl Tanner, Myrtle Winterbum, Rita Russell and Gwen Lamport, Messrs James and Thomas Keltie, Kenzie and Toby Blair, Robert and William Russell, George Bisphan, Donald Meyer, Jack Wilson, Victor Lilley, Walter Stackhouse, James Russell, Master Allan Russell and many others. A fancy dress party was held in the Methodist Schoolroom, Richmond, to commemorate the seventh birthday of the Richmond Free Kindergarten. The room was decorated with bowls of pink and white flowers, whilst pink and white streamers formed a canopy overhead. There were many original and pretty dresses. A lovely daisy and white rabbit were exquisitely dressed, whilst a “ lucky" black cat who meowed and scrambled about in a most realistic fashion caused much merriment. There were beautiful sunflowers, Mother Hubbard, 80-Peep, Frogs, the Man in the Moon, Pierrots, Crackers and Fairies, Aulsebrooks ad vertisements and a copy of the “ Lyttelton Times ” which made a merry medley. Several friends gave delightful musical items, whilst many children gave recitations, the young folk showed much talent and spoke their lines. Tea was provided by the parents of the children. After tea prises for the best fancy dresses were presented. The judges were Mrs Flesher, Misses A. Thomson and A. M’Uraith. Votes of thanks were passed to all who had assisted.

Miss Williams (Hawke’s Bay) is the guest of Mrs Edgar Stead, Il&m. Mrs J. Laing (Napier) and Mr and Mrs R. F. Smith (Greymouth) are staying at the Clarendon Hotel. Mr and Mrs Sidney Brice, Miss Mollie Brice and Miss Marie Hamilton motored from Nelson for the races, and are guests at St Elmo. Mr R. Knight, Power Board Engineer for Dannevirke, and Mrs Knight, are paying a short visit to Mr Knight’s parents, Mr and Mrs E. JL. Knight, 88, May's Road, St Albans. Mr and Mrs V. S. Jacobs, Mr and Mrs R. H. Hudson, Mr and Mrs A. C. Hanlon and Miss Eileen Hanlon arrived from Dunedin last night and are staying at the United Service Hotel. Mr and Mrs T. A. Duncan, Hunterville, Mr and Mrs R. J. Murphy, Mrs Brewer, Mrs Booker, and Mr and Mrs Hally, Wellington, arrived in Christchurch this morning arid are staying at Warner’s Hotel. The engagement is announced of Robert Henry, third son of the late Mr J. J. and Mrs Dawson, of St Kilda, Melbourne, to Marguerite (Uerite), only daughter of Mr and Mrs J. E. Broad, of “ Hokonui,” Oamaru. Miss Harcourt, Mrs Wacking, Mrs Gage Williams, Wellington, Mr and Mrs W. S. Spence, Auckland, Mrs and Miss Holmes, Masterton, Mrs Armstrong, Akitio, and Miss G. Maher, Hastings, are among the recent arrivals staying at the United Service Hotel. Mr and Mrs W. Perry, Mr and Mrs D. Buchanan, Mr and Mrs S. R. Gawith, Miss Falconer, Masterton, Mr and Mrs P. F. Sinclair and Mr and Mrs E. B. O’Donnell, Wellington, arrived in Christchurch this morning and are staying at the Clarendon HotelMiss J. S. Willson, BA., at present games mistress in the Harwich County High School, has been appointed to fill the vacancy on the Technical College staff caused by the resignation of Miss Cramond. Miss Willson will commence her duties in February, 1928. Appreciation of the work done by Miss Bishop as relieving principal of the Technical College girls’ hostel during the last eight months has been placed on record by the Ladies’ Advisory Committee of the Board of Governors.

The All Sports Assembly will hold a huge Guy Fawkes’ carnival dance in the Albert Hall, Cashel Street, this evening. A special feature will be a grand parade by the children in their costumes between 8 pm. and 8.30 pm. Two prizes will be awarded to the winners in the children’s section, and two prizes in the adults’ section. Mr and Mrs G. Rutherford and Miss Betty Rutherford (Macdonald Downs), Mr and Mrs D. G. Macfarlane (Waiau), Mrs and Miss Letitia Rutherford (North Canterbury), Mr and Mrs Richard Hudson, Mrs L. Hudson, Mrs Finlayson (Dunedin), Mr and Mrs M. Bethell (Pahau Pastures), Mr and Mrs G. L. Rutherford (Connemara), and Mr and Mrs W. P. Evans (Temuka) are amongst the guests at Warner’s Hotel. A party was given by Mr and Mrs W. J. R. Stevens at their residence in Francis Street, Burwood, recently in honour of the thirteenth birthday of their only daughter, Phyllis, /who was the recipient of many beautiful presents. The afternoon passed quickly with games, tracking, and a paperchase, and when tea had been served a campfire was lit, and the surrounding pines echoed with songs.
