MOTORISTS WANT IMPROVED HIGHWAY.
GUARANTEE OF £l5O TOWARDS COST OF WORK In order that the work of improving the main highway between Rolleston and the Rakaia bridge should not be held up, the council of the Canterbury Automobile Association decided, at a special meeting last night, to guarantee to find the sum of £l5O towards the cost. It was reported by the Roads Committee of the association that all t£e counties affected except Paparua had agreed to meet their allocation of the cost of the work. The quota of the Paparua Council was £l5O, and rather than see the work held up the committee recommended the council to guarantee the amount required. Mr B. Falck, president of the association, said the Paparua Council had decided not to contribute, as there was no part of the road in that county. If they could guarantee the amount the work would be put in hand at once, but if not it would lx*, held up indefinitely. The Roads Committee had felt that the work of the Paparua Comity Council should not be belittled, and it should not be made to appear that the council was hindering progress. The idea that was uppermost was that the work should not be held up. The representatives of the County Council saw no reason why the matter should not be made public. The subsidy promised for the work was £4 to £l. The association had already given more than £l5O for the completion of other roads. The recommendation had been approved unanimously by the Roads Committee. Mr H. M. Garrick moved—“ That, in view of the good work already carried out by the Paparua County Council, and as evidence of this association’s appreciation of that work, this association is prepared, if necessary, to guarantee the payment to the Highways Board of the amount asked for from the Paparua Council, £l5O, so that the work of reconstruction of the main highway between Rolleston and the Rakaia bridge can be proceeded with immediately. The association trusts, how- | ever, that the Paparua County Coun- : cil may yet see its way to contribute ' a substantial amount of the quota allocated to it.”
Mr H. C. Harley .seconded the motion and said that there was a possibility that the Paparua Council might find £75 of the amount needed. The motion was carried unanimously.
