UNEMPLOYED’S SCHEME IS NOT APPROVED BY LABOUR COUNCIL.
QUESTION OF WAGES UNDER DISCUSSION. Per Press Association. WELLINGTON, June 24. The District Labour Council last night received a deputation on behalf of the unemployed meeting held in Abel Smith Street on Wednesday. The deputation made the requests—(l) That they should be recognised as an unemployed organisation and an integral part of the Labour movement, allied with the District Council; (2) that they should have representation on the Unemployed Committee set up by the District Council: and (3) that they should have free use of the Trades Hall on one night a week to hold meetings. * The requests were turned down. The deputation stated that the object of the organisation was to induce the unemployed not to take the rates of wages offered, but to go to the Hospital Board and demand maintenance. Mr Bromley, secretary of the council, stated that that body was not satisfied with the rates offered, but did not approve of the alternative scheme.
