PRINCE OF WALES NOW THIRTY-THREE.
MOST POPULAR MAN IN BRITISH EMPIRE
To-day is the thirty-third anniversary of the birth of the Prince of Wales, frequently referred to as the most popular 3'oung man in the Empire. In Christchurch flags were flown on a number of buildings. The usual Court sittings did not take place, but otherwise there was little to mark the occasion.
The Prince received a naval training at Osborne and Dartmouth, and was invested as Prince of Wales at Carnarvon in 1911. He was also made a K.G. in 1911. He stayed some months in Paris in 1912 to fully acquaint himself with France and the French language, and later received the Legion or Honour irom the President, and then the Croix de Guerre in 1915. He was promoted to the rank of lieutenant on the eve of taking a tour of Germany in 1913, and in June, 1914, performed his first public duty by laying the foundation stone of St. Anselm's Church, Kensington. When the war broke out in 1914, the Prince of Wales was attached to Sir John French’s staff, and was the bear er of the historic despatch concerning the battle of Neuve Chapelle. His twenty-first birthday was celebrated quietly in 1915, and the following year saw him in Egypt as staff-captain. The Prince visited the Italian front in 1917 and took his seat in the House of Lords in February, 1918. In August, 1919, he started on a tour of Canada and in March, 1920, set out on a world tour of 45,000 miles. It is unnecessary to refer to the popularity he won in Australia and New Zealand.
