AUCKLAND HORSES DISAPPOINT IN SYDNEY RACES.

(Si-jecial to the “Star.") AUCKLAND. June 23. Neither of the Auckland trainers. J. Williamson or J. T. Jamieson, has had any luck with his team in Sydney. According to a recent visitor to Sydney, Pentagram disappointed in his first schooling task over the steeplechase fences at Randwick. He got rid

of his rider, A. Rutherford, at the first fence, and the latter received injuries to his face, but was well enough to pilot Pentagram in a steeplechase four days later. The layers of the odds d:d not take any risk with Pentagram, and he was second favourite at the finish. He was running along nicely in fourth place when half the distance had been covered, but he fell at the same fence that caused him trouble when schooling. Williamson then decided to change riders, and O. Cullum was secured. but Pentagram refused to jump when tried again over the pony hurdles. He was a starter in the steeplechase at Randwick last Monday week. After covering a round, he was in front, and he was first over the fence that had previously brought him to grief. He was then pulled back into third place and was going nicely, when he came down five furlongs from home. He will probably be a competitor at the Rosehiil meeting next Saturday.

Prince Otto, who was taken oyer to Sydney by J. T. Jamieson, had his first race there at the recent Randwick meeting, and with a little more luck at the turn would have been in a place, if not the actual winner. He finished fourth, and he may change hands over there.

Le Choucas, who has performed indifferently in New Zealand since la.it spring, was a starter at the recent Randwick meeting. On the first day he was backed down to a comparatively short price, but never looked to have a chance; in fact, he was last to finish. He was started on the second day in a mile event, in which The Thorn also figured. He was at a shorter price than The Thorn, but the latter, ridden by M. M'Carten. hopped out smartly and finished third. Le Choucas was with The Thorn till the entrance to the straight, but dropped j back and finished in the ruck. Clarus had his first race at Cantcrburv Park last Saturday and finished third. He had been galloping brilliantly with The Thorn and he was given a chance. At the Moorefield meeting next baturdav, Le Choucas and The Immigrant are in the Flying Handicap, and The Thorn and Le Choucas in the Hurst* ville Mile. HANDICAPS.
