New arrivals at Warner’s Hotel include Messrs J. J. Gibson (Wellington), Ronald Sutherland (Wellington), Edward Houchins (Sydney), A. W. M’Coll (Wellington), H. Pittandrigh (Auckland) and M. B, Hawkes (Christchurch).

Staying at the United Service Hotel are Messrs W. E. Bullock (Coventry, England), A lex Goodwin (Wellington), W. Sutter (Wellington), W. Jacobi (Auckland), K. G. Chamberlain (Wellington), W. D. Cowie (Melbourne), L. W. Gardner (Wellington). The seven-year appointments of seven members of the Legislative Council expire on Saturday next, June 25, two days after the opening of Parliament, while the seventh appointment runs out on October 6. The Government is deferring its announcement concerning the filling of the vacancies until the appointments actually expire, but it is understood that all of the councillors who are due to retire will be reappointed. They are the Hon E. H. Clark, the Hon M. Cohen, the Hon W. Earnshaw, the Hon Sir Edwin Mitchelson, the Hon R. Scott, and the Hon G. J. Smith. The seventh retirement due in October is that of the Hon Sir William Hall-Jones.

Sir Ignace Jan Paderewski passed through Christchurch on his way to Wellington last night. The Secretary of the Labour Department (Mr F. W. Rowley) is at present on an official visit to the South Island, but he is expected to return to Wellington about the end of the week. Official advice of his appointment as Official Assignee in Auckland has been received by Mr G. N. Morris, who has been acting in the position since the retirement of Mr W. S. Fisher last year. Mr Morris, who has been in the Government service for twenty-four years, was formerly Resident Commissioner at Niue Island. Professor W. Riddet, Professor of Agriculture at Auckland University College, has been tentatively appointed director of dairy research under the Department of Scientific Research. The appointment is connected with the establishment of a dairy research institute at Palmerston North under a special committee of management appointed by the Department. Professor Riddet will hold the position of director concurrently with his appointment at the New Zealand College of Agriculture.
