Before Edmund Lowe appeared in the “ hard-boiled ” role of __ Sergeant Quirt in the Fox classic, “ What Price Glory,” he had always played the role of the dashing hero, dapper, and fashionably attired, who Avon the girl and settled all complications with a magnificent gesture. But in “What Price Glory ” he completely changed his type of characterisation and lived the role of the tough, fighting Marine, and scored the biggest success of his career, Lowe will next be seen here in the featured role of “ One Increasing Purpose.” the Fox adaptation of A. S. M. Hutchinson’s novel of the same name. 52 55 Kathleen Key plays the leading feminine role in “ Hey, Hey, Cowboy.” Hoot Gibson’s latest Universal-Jewel Western which will be screened here next week. Although young in years, Miss Key is a veteran screen player and has played important leads in other Universal super-productions, achieving distinction for her splendid portrayal as the heroine of “ The Flaming Frontier Another comedy is being made by Syd Chaplin for Warner Brothers. It shows the famous comedian of “ Charley’s Aunt ” and “ The Man on the Box ” in the guise of a racecourse tout, and Miss Helene Costello assists Chaplin in getting the maximum amount of laughter out of many ludicrous situations. “ The Missing Link ” and “ The New Boy ” are two more Syd Chaplin comedies to be released in New Zealand shortly. Vet another world-famous pianist, Friedman, is shortly to tour New Zealand, opening in Auckland on July 16. With his advent New Zealand will have heard three of the greatest pianists in the world within a year. Backhaus has played here, and Paderewski will precede Friedman by a few days. “ Friedman in his prime, with prestige from great European triumphs and the Beethoven Centenary Celebration at Vienna justified his high reputation,” stated a critic of the “ Sydney Morning Herald ” in commenting on the artist’s first Australian performance. “ His -was the most exquisite playing ever heard in Sydney. It was an evening of sheer beauty and a large audience was manifestly impressed by his brilliant attainment.” :: “ Bardelys, the Magnificent.” from Sabatini's novel, will be released by Metro-Goldwyn at an early date. John Gilbert and Karl Dane, stars of the “ Big Parade,” together with Eleanor Boardman and George K. Arthur, head the cast of this picture, which has been produced on an elaborate scale. Rejoining Paramount, the company with which she made her initial movie debut a number of years ago in “David

Harum,” May Allison appears as one of the featured cast in “ The Telephone Girl.” Her latest films were “ The City ” and “ One Increasing Purpose.” In private life Bert Lvtell, star of the Master Picture due for early release, “ The Lone Wolf Returns,” is quiet and unassuming, an athlete and a good fellow amongst his own sex. He is a deep student of literature and, with his wife, Claire Windsor, he leads an ideal domestic li£e in the Hollywood Hills. Fox Films, during the 1927 season, will give the screen a series of Tom Mix and Buck Jones productions that will set a new standard for “ Westerns.” Authors whose fiction is rated among the best in current literature have been engaged to write special stories to fit the personalities of these stars and many of the leading novels and short stories have been purchased. Among the authors who are at work on special stories or who have contracted to write them are Adela Rogers St Johns, Jackson Gregory, J. Allan Dunn, Shannon Fife, Charles Darn ton, Max Brand and John Stone. That’s one of the punch, situations contained in Paramount’s production “ New Vork.” Ricardo Cortez is the musician; Lois Wilson, the fiancee, and Estelle Taylor, the victim. Briefly, the story is "that of four Bowery boys who have shown a “ gang spirit ” since childhood. All four attain maturity and branch out to make their own way in the world. One becomes a politician, two join a jazz band, and the fourth develops into a professional mob leader. Then a shadow in the form of a woman cames between them. Miss Taylor finds it hard to hide her love for Cortez, but his mind is enraptured by a society belle. Cortez spuming her, she marries William Powell so that she may stay near his friend.
