BIRTH RATE IN 1926 WAS LOWEST YET.

(Special to the “Star.”) WELLINGTON. June 23. According to the Health Department, the birth-rate for 1926 was the lowest ever recorded in the Dominion. The births of 28,473 living children were registered during that period, against 28,153 in 1925. The rate for last year represents 21.05 per thousand of the mean population. That for 1925 was 21.17. The total deaths were 11,819, nearly SOO in excess of those for the previous year, 11,026. The death rate maintains its position on a reasonably low level, 8.74 per thousand of the mean population. The increase was due to an epidemic of whooping cough and • influenza.
