Miss Airey, who was the guest of Mrs D. J. Sustins, St Albans, left last evening for Auckland.

Miss MofFatt has returned to Spreadeagle, Ashburton, after spending the week-end with Mrs R. Cleland, Bedford Street, Belfast.

Latest arrivals at the Hotel Federal include:—Mr J. M. Ilarre (Auckland), Mr A. G. Walker (Wellington), Mr A. Stone (Dunedin), Miss D. Skelly (Wellington), Mr J. Heaton Barker (Auckland), Miss E. Tanie (Wellington). The wedding was quietly solemnised at the Presbyterian Church, Khandallah, on June 7, by the Rev 11. Watson, of May, younger daughter of the late Mr and Mrs Thomas Buckeridgc, of Wellington, and Robert Valentine, only son of Mrs Scrimgeour, of Ngaio, and of the late Mr J. R. Scrimgeour. The bride was given away by Air 11. Forsythe-Con nelly. The staff of Messrs J. C. Williamson presented Mrs Scrimgeour (jun.) with a cheque, Mr H. Stringer, secretary, making the presentation in the absence of Mr Bert Royle, New Zealand representative of the firm. A very enjoyable evening was spent on Tuesday at the residence of Miss Forward, 111, Fitzgerald Avenue, when the girls of Madame Daley’s room, J. Ballantyne and Co., met to bid her farewell, on the eve of her departure for Sydney. During the evening, Miss Shepherd, on behalf of those present, took the opportunity of presenting the guest of honour with a suede travelling cushion in token of the high esteem in which she was held. The supper tables were tastefully decorated in green and gold, and musical items were contributed by Misses Cookson, Bates, Buckley, Deare, Angus, Cox, Edmonds and Schimanski, interspersed with games and competitions. The winners of the competitions were Misses Searell, Boloski and Easton. A happy evening was brought to a close by the singing of “Auld Lang Syne.” A very enjoyable evening was held at the residence of Air and Mrs C. Sealey, Ward Street, Addington, in honour of Miss Maisie Kennedy, whose marriage to Air J. Popinhagen takes place this week. Games and competitions were enjoyed by all, the winners of competitions being Alisses Alaud Youngman and Doris Laine, Messrs Ted and Arthur Prestidge. Those who rendered vocal and instrumental items were Misses Eva, Constance and 'Florence Sealey. Aliss Tess Darragh gave elocutionary items. After a dainty supper had been served the guest of the evening opened the numerous gifts. Among those present were:—Misses Alaisie Kennedy, Tess Darragh, Kathleen Wilson, Doris Laine, Irene Laine, Rose Salmons, Alaud Youngman, Lucy Attewell, Olive Youngman, Messrs Donald Ashby, Charles Prestidge, Harry Isle, Ted Prestidge, Alan Sealey, Arthur Prestidge. The happy evening was brought to a close by the singing of “ Auld Lang Syne.” The monthly meeting of the North Brighton W.C.T.U. was held in the Baptist Church on Tuesday afternoon, ■when Aliss B. AI. Harband presided over a good attendance. A challenge from the New Brighton Union for a membership campaign was accepted. It was resolved to obtain convention numbers of the “White Ribbon” for distribution to intending members. The secretary reported on the deputation to Air D. G. Sullivan, AI.P., when a petition praying for a two-issue ballot paper and signed by 2700 women electors of Avon was presented. Aliss Harband gave a report of the New Zealand Alliance conference and of the deputation to the Prime Alinister. Mrs Dixon thanked the members for electing her evangelistic superintendent, and at her suggestion it was decided to hold monthly prayer meetings in members’ houses, the first of such meetings to be held at Aliss Ilarband’s home on the afternoon of June 30. One new member was initiated and the president reported that two ladies both over eighty years of age were desirous of joining the branch. An instructive address on scientific temperance was delivered by the president. Alesdames Henry and Thompson were deputed to act as hostesses for the next meeting. At the close of the meeting afternoon tea was served.

Airs Duncan Gillanders is the guest of Mrs D. M’Gilvray, Knowles Street.

Aliss Ngaio Marsh has returned to Christchurch after a brief stay in Wellington.

Air and Airs F. C. Swenev, who were spending a holiday wfith Air and Mrs C. R. Kirk, Peterborough Street, have returned to their home at Kai-lwi. Eleven months’ leave of absence was granted Aliss Laurenson, dispenser at the Christchurch Hospital, at yesterday’s meeting of the North Canterbury Hospital Board.

Recent arrivals at Warner’s Hotel include Airs J. J. Bourke (Wellington), Mr and Airs G. L. Rutherford (Parnassus),. Airs A. H. Chaffey (Waiau) and Aliss AI. T. Roberts (Waipara). On Saturday evening a concert arranged by Airs J. C. Holmes and Aliss Gibb was given at the Coronation Sanatorium. Songs were given by Airs Henderson, Miss Aluff, Mr Quaine and Air Odell. Aliss Gibb was accompanist. Air E. Archbold kindly lent his car for the occasion.

Airs Rollo and Alaster K. Rollo (Christchurch), Mr A. Olsen (Auckland), Air and Airs B. Al’Alillan and child and Alaster Al’Millan (Culverden), Mr (Dunedin) and Air Jones (Christchurch) are among the recent arrivals at the New Brighton Cafe, New Brighton. The “Five Hundred Circle” of the Canterbury Women’s Club held its usual meeting on Alonday night, and, despite bad weather, a goodly number were present, amongst whom were: Mrs Holland, president of the circle, and Alesdames Andrews, Brambary, Bradley, Cowper, Ford, Gardner, Hinckey, Atacnamara, Alounsey, Pickles, Rockett, Sains Werat, Wilson, Winsor and Young, Alisses Ford, Gar ton, Macdonald (hostess), Alenzies (2), Orchard and Thomson. Supper was served at 9.30 p.m. after an enjoyable evening. Afrs Rockett was the winner of the prize. On Alonday evening an enjoyable concert arranged by Airs J. C. Holmes and Airs R. Sierakowski was given at the Receiving Home by the following artists: Songs, Alesdames D. Stallard and R_. Sierakowski, Alisses Olga Wackcd, W. Bowbyes, AI. Edmonds, C. Langridge and Alice Vincent, Alcssrs Mann and AT Williams: monologues and recitations, Aliss M. Edmonds and Air D. Wills. Miss Naare Hooper, by request, contributed Thomas Bracken’s

“Not Understood.” Air Davis’s orchestra supplied music. Accompanists were Miss Johns and Airs Jackson. Cars to convey the party were kindly supplied by Alessrs E. Archbold, H. B. Atansfield, Spence, Armstrong and W. J. Nicholson.

The following pupils of Aliss Digby’s Commercial School have been successful in obtaining Pitman’s shorthand theory certificate, as the result of an examination held in May last. The first three candidates are in order of merit: Alelva llaigh 1, Amy Wall 2, Phyllis Cobden 3, Alarjorie Armstrong, Roma Boyce, Alice Church, Alillicent Cunningham, Ruth Emmett, Joyce Empson, Mildred Foster, Winnie Grieve, Sadie Harding, Lorna Jones, Yvonne Livingstone, Eleanor AFCurrie, Vera Pcagram, Alice Piercy, Alary Rose, Phyllis Spencer.

A successful and enjoyable concert was held in the Peace Alemorial Ilall on Tuesday evening, when over £7 was raised for the school library fund. Items were given by Air Sumner, Masters Ray Thomson and Dawson Douglas, and Alisses Eileen Henry, Melva Cater, Betty Thomson, Audrey Thompson, Anita Graham, Thelma Thomson, Freda Judkins, Edna Henderson and Joan Thomson. The concert was arranged by Air Fred A. Judkins, who also played the accompaniments. At the close of the concert Air E. A. M. Leaver, chairman of the School Committee, commented on the interest taken by the head master (Air W. E. Judkins) in the school library, over £l2 having been already spent on suitable books. ALr Leaver also thanked Mr F. A. Judkins and the members of the concert party for the splendid programme rendered, and their help to the library fund.
