In a letter to the Management Committee of the Canterbury Rugby Union last evening, the Canterbury Rugby Referees’ Association asked: (1) The minimum and maximum times of each spell in all open grades. (2) The minimum and maximum times of spells in the under-age grades and in the schoolboys’ competition. Mr S. F. Wilson said it often happened that two teams could not agree, one wanting to play forty-minute spells and the other forty-five. At a recent meeting of referees a big discussion had taken place on the question. One referee said he had let the teams toss for it, another said he had ordered forties, and a third said he bad ordered forty-fives. The referees were in doubt as to what they should do. The rules did not say that teams could be prevented from playing fifty-minute or even hour spells. The question arose out of the Old BoysAlbion game. Mr Britten said it was understood that the maximum was forty-five minutes each spell. Mr Wilson: That is so, but who is to decide the point? The chairman, Mr A. E. M’Phail, said the rules stated that the referees were to decide it. Mr Wilson: But the referees do not wish to have to decide. The chairman expressed the opinion that they would be on safe ground to leave the matter in the hands of the referees. Mr Wilson: They don’t want that; they want us to decide. Mr A. Barrett contended that the question was one entirely for the referee. If it was left to him he would decide on forties for a wet day and forty-fives for a fine day. On the motion of Mr A. Duggan it was decided that where teams could not agree a maximum of forty-minute spells should be played. It was further resolved that the maximum time for play in the open grades and in the under-age grades should be forty-five minutes each spell, while iri the under-15£ grade and the schoolboys’ competition the maximum time of each spell should be thirty minutes. | TO ASSIST SOCCER. ARRANGING RUGBY MATCHES. ' At the meeting of the Ma nagement Committee of the Canterbury Rugby Union last evening a letter was received from the Lancaster Park Board of Control advising that the Canterbury Football Association had been granted the use of Lancaster Park on July 2 for the test match between New Zealand and Canada. This letter was. received without dis- j cussion, but there was a good deal of | talk later on when the report of the ] Competitions Committee was before the ' meeting. The Competitions Commitee suggested that on July 2 the game between Albion and Varsity should be played at Ra.ngiI ora, as a senior match had been promJ ised at this centre, j This suggestion was adopted. J The Competitions Committee further 1 I recommended that all matches on that 1 day should commence at 1.30 p.m., out • of courtesy to the Canadian team and 1 the Soccer people. 1 The chairman, Mr A. E. M’Phail, said • they had some difficulty in connection - with the recommendation of the Competitions Committee. Mr S. F. YVilson said they could suggest to the clubs that the matches be played early. Mr YV. Britten, chairman of the Competitions Committee, said that several of the teams were already trying to arrange their matches for 1.30 p.m. j The two senior games could be played early at Lancaster Park. Mr M’Phail said the Soccer people had , I tried to meet the Union from a financial ’ point of view. They had offered 5 per cent of the gate. The season ticket , holders were the trouble as they had to • be considered. I Mr Wilson said that the Soccer people could not agree to the season ticket holders getting their regular seats. Soccer would be controlling the park r I that day.

In reply to 31 r W. Maxwell, Mr Wilson said the Soccer people proposed to reserve the members' stand. Mr Britten: That would keep them Mr Maxwell said the only alternative was to play at the Show Grounds. Mr Wilson expressed the opinion that he did not think they would get two teams to play early on the Show Mr Britten said there would be some ticket holders demanding to get into Lancaster Park if there was .Rugby played there. Mr Wilson: If the games are not played at Lancaster Park, why not play at St James’s Park, Papanui, and Halswell. Mr A. E. Flower said it would detract from the interest in Soccer if they played Rugby at Lancaster Park at all. On the motion of Mr Britten it was decided to get into touch with the senior teams to ascertain if they could play at I.SO p.m., and failing that the matches will be arranged at 2.45 on outside grounds.
