Mr and Mrs G. Wad-worth (Akaroa) are at the Clarendon Hotel. Mi- and Mrs P. W. Schultz, of Sydney, are among the recent arrivals staying at Warner’s Hotel. Mr and Mrs G. O. Rutherford (Culverden) and Mr and Mrs B. P. Stewart (Pigeon Bay) are guests at the United Service Hotel. Miss Nancy Wilkinson, 3lines Road, who has been on an extended tour abroad, will return to Christchurch today. The engagement is announced between Mr R. 11. Orbell, Geraldine, son of the late Mr and Mrs Maclcod Orbell, Christchurch, to Miss Elizabeth Peters Serjeant, eldest daughter of Mr and Mrs A. G. Serjeant, Ballarat, Victoria. The weekly tournament of the •Addington Euchre Assembly was held in the Oddfellows’ Hall, Sclwyn Street, on Saturday night. The following were the winners: Ladies—Miss Hutton, Mrs Brown, Mrs Burnett, Mrs Busfield and Mrs Hogg; men —Messrs Costello, Rennie, Lang, Markholm, Turnbull and Hutchinson. Guests at the Hotel Federal include: —Mr J. R. Bruce, Timaru; Mr E. L. Peters, Fendalton; Mr A. Duncan, Dunedin: Mrs R. Moffat, Wellington; Mr Tilsofi, Christchurch; Mr and Mrs Wilkinson. Cheviot; Mr W. A. Shemeld, Methven; Mr W. G. Imrie, Timaru; Mr Aleck Wilson, Waimate; Mr R. S. Lawrence, Auckland; Mr B. Withell, Ealing. The ladies of “Holly Lea,” with their invited guests were treated to a delightful musical programme on Saturday evening last, when the “Christchurch Lyric Four” (Messrs S. J. Morgan, 11. Blakeley, K. More and E. J. Johnson) paid a long promised visit. With the quartette were Mrs Cox (who not only played the accompaniments but sang a couple of solos), and Miss Lowe, who also sang a number of songs. Every item was much enjoyed, the singing of the quartette, in numbers both grave and gay, being very much appreciated. After supper, Miss Todd expressed the warmest thanks of the listeners to the entertainers, who agreed to come again at a date not far distant.

Mrs Aylmer Vivian (Riccarton) is paying a short visit to Wellington. Miss Hester Gould (Fendalton) is the guest of Mrs Phillip Sherratt, Gisborne. Miss Marjorie Russell, of Timaru, returned to the south to-day after a brief stay in Christchurch. Mrs A. Weld has returned to Marlborough after a brief stay in Christchurch. Mrs Charles Teschemaker, Blenheim, who was staying in Christchurch, has returned to her home. Mr and Mrs Templeton, Dunedin, arc among the recent arrivals staying at the Clarendon Hotel. Mrs George Macdonald (Lowry Hills, Cheviot) is visiting her mother, Lady Clifford. Mrs R. G. Petre is leaving to-morrow for the north, to visit her daughter, Mrs Vincent Ward, Ileretaunga. Mrs W. B. Stevenson, (“Upcot, ” Blenheim) is the guest of Mrs A. K. Anderson, St Andrew’s College. Mr and Mrs John IC. Macfarlane, Parnassus, are at present in Christchurch, and are staying at the Clarendon Hotel. Mrs George Gould, who has been staying with Mr and Mrs Roger Gould, at Rotherham, returned to Fendalton to-day. Mrs IT. Quane (Innes Road), who underwent a serious operation some weeks ago, and has been recuperating at Waimate, returned home on Monday. A pleasant evening was given recently at the home of Mrs Murphy, Barbadoes Street, in honour of Mrs Pearce and Miss Sargent, of Waimate. Musical items and dancing were enjoyed. Amongst those present were: Mrs Pearce, Mrs Boland, Mr and Mrs Roach, Mr and Mrs Murphy, Misses M. Sargent. B. Menalaus, D. Cambell, M. Menalaus, and J. Murphy, Messrs J. Roach, T. Warren, J. Murphy, IT. Wallace, A. Billens, E. Murphy, J. Hughey, R. Murphy, P. Soljak, R. Boland and J. 11. Murphy. A very enjoyable evening was spent recently at the residence of Mr and Mrs G. Pearce, “Kirkless," Coalgate, when they entertained a number of friends on the occasion of the coming of age of their eldest son, Ben. The evening was spent in game and competitions, which were won by Mr E. Hawke and Miss W. Clark. Among those present were:— Mr and Mrs G. Pearce, Mr and Mrs W. Broomfield, Misses M. L. Pearce, M. Ilawke, L. Hawke, R. Grafton, 11. Clark, G. ('lark, W. Olderson, S. Olderson, L. Adams and A. Adams. After a dainty supper had been served, the singing of “Auld Lang Syne” brought a pleasant evening to a close. On Saturday night the Ashley School was filled with well-wishers and friends of Miss Dorothy Banks, who is to be married shortly. The function took the form of a kitchen evening. A very happy time was spent in games and dancing. After supper had been served Mr R. Collie asked the guest of honour to accept the many and varied, useful gifts with best wishes for her future happiness from all present. Mr S. Quick, on behalf of Miss Banks, suitably responded. During the evening songs were given by Mrs W. Mayer. A Monte Carlo waltz was won by Miss Thelma Peach and Mr Greg Smith. The singing of “For She’s a Jolly Good Fellow” brought an enjoyable evening to a close. Music for the evening was supplied by Mrs Petrie, Misses E. Bowby-es, L. T. Peach and Mr Mayer.
