SMOKE CONCERT GIVEN BY SUMNER ROWING CLUB.

Last evening:, In the Town Hall at Sumner, a successful smoke concert, under the auspices of the Sumner-Red-cliffs Rowing: Club, was held. After the toast of “ The King-.” Mr R. J. Hobbs replied to the toast of ** The Canterbury Rowing Association.” He apologised for the absence of the president (Mr F. D. Kesteven). and said that it was the revival of Interest such as there lias been in the Sumner-Red-cliffs club that gave the executive proof that their work is appreciated. Members must not think that because they are numerically small they will never succeed in regattas and competitions. He appealed to the club to join the Olympic Association, by the formation of which they hoped to raise funds to sepd p. crew to the Olympic games. The club captain, ~Jtv J. Gllbv, said that, thanks to the support of the residents of the two districts, the club has been able to renovate its boats, pure aase two pleasure boats, add a ladi' s’ dressing-room and repair the landing stage. A new feature had been the admittance of ladies as members. During the evening the following trophies were presented:—L. S. food's championship cup (youths’ aingle sculls championship), R. N. Comerford. Medals presented by Mrs G. H. Woods for most points in new members’ race, R. A. Comerford and B. Blackwell. Medals for services rendered won by J. Marshall, O. Wing and J. Wing. Other toasts honoured during the evening were: “The Sumner-Redcliffs Rowing Club.” proposed by Mr R. J. Hobbs and responded to by the club captain. Mr J. Gllby; “ Sister Clubs and Kindred Clubs,” proposed by Mr J. Gilby and responded to by Mr R. Duggan (Union) and Mr R. J. Hobbs (Canterbury); “The Ladies.” proposed by tb-* president and responded t,o by Mr O. J ohnston. Items were contributed by Messrs M. Woods, B. Rennell, R. Stevens, A. Hunnibell and R. J. Hobbs (accompanist).
