With reference to the congestion of traffic at the Bank of New Zealand corner a letter was received at last night’s meeting of the City Council from Messrs T. N. Gibbs and Co. stating that a great number of people were brought into Cathedral Square every day, especially from Hereford Street and the business area to the south solely for the purpose of visiting the post office. The letter suggested that a branch should be established in Manchester Street near Cashel Street or that additional posting boxes should be provided on the Hereford Street frontage of the post office. The council decided to take steps to have the matter brought before the proper authorities.

The Unemployment Committee wrote to the Tramway Board yesterday suggesting that its employees should contribute 3d in the pound out of their wages for a few months towards the fund.

The board, on the Hon J. Barr’s motion, decided to refer the communication to the employees concerned, and the question of a subsidy from the board to the Works and Traffic Committee.
