MODIFICATION OF BUS REGULATIONS SOUGHT.

Under an amendment to the Christchurch Tramways Act to be presented at the next session of Parliament the Tramway Board is seeking for modifications of the Motor Omnibus Traffic Act 1926, in so far as the running of the board’s buses is concerned. The board Wishes that apart from prescribing a route for any ominibus service carried on by it, the licensing authority should not have power to prescribe any other conditions; that the running of motor omnibuses by the board for the purposes of special events or functions or for the purposes ot supplementing a tramway service should not be deemed to be the carrying on of a motor omnibus service; that the form' of license issued to the board tor the use of an omnibus should be modified to allow the omnibus to be used on any route traversed by a motor omnibus service of’ the board or to be used for special events or functions or for the purpose of supplementing a tramway service. The matter was referred to by the By-Laws Committee in the course of its report to the City Council last night. The committee expressed the opinion that the powers sought by the board should not be granted. The committee recommended the council to oppose, the modifications provided in the Bill arid to request local members of Parliament to do so when the Bill comes before the House. The recommendation was approved.
