SPLENDID GAME FROM THE NEW YORK TOURNAMENT. The accompanying excellent game was played In the masters' tournament at New York, the contestants being A. Nlmxewitch and Dr Vidmar: —

White resigns. (a) Typical of the modern school, which does not care to commit itself tc any definite pawn at the start. (b) If QP. moves B lowed by P x P. <c) The challenge! The players now attttck on either wing. Who will get in first? (d) Not alone threatening P x P. followed by Q x Q P, but also Q Q 3. (e) The pawns now begin to attack on either flank. (f) Q R 6 ch, followed by R Q Kt 1 seems better. (g> Now if Q R 6 ch, K to Q 1, and White cannot play Q x R I’, because of B R 7 cli in reply. (h) Black now’ lias the upper hand. (i) Seeing his game going. White makes a desperate attempt to take advantage of the insecure position of Black’s rook. An attempt to do so by R —■ K B 7 would be met by R x P ch; 25 Q x R, Q x R. DOMINION CLUB CHAMPIONSHIP TOURNAMENT. • The following information concerning the annual telegraph series of matches for the Now Zealand Chess Club’s championship is supplied by Mr F. A. Kelling, of Wellington:— It is hoped to play the 1927-28 annual telegraphic tournament for the club championship of New Zealand on the following dates (the name of the adjudicating centre being given in parentheses i:—July 4 and 11, Auckland v. Otago (Wellington); July 25 and August 1, Canterbury v. Wellington (Otago); August 20 and 27, Auckland v. Wellington (Canterbury); August 20 and 27, Otago v. Canterbury (Auckland), September 12 and 19. Auckland v. Canterbury (Otago); September 26 and October 3, Otago v. Wellington (Auckland ). It is regretted that matches involving the use of the Cook Strait cable will again have to be played on Monday evenings. It may be added that this contest was inaugurated five years ago, the Wellington Chess Club having won It on three occasions (1924, 1925 and 1927), and the Auckland Chess Club twice (1923 and 1926). For more than twenty years past the KieseritzkyRoll notation has been used in telegraph matches in New Zealand. Under this system moves are designated by numbers, instead of by letters. For Instance, pawn to king’s fourth Is telegraphed as 25 to 45, instead of as PK4. This numerical notation has proved to be anything but satisfactory. Mistakes have been numerous, causing much delay and vexation. In last year’s Auckland v. Wellington match, the numerical system was dropped, and the English notation was reverted to, with very happy results. The few’ errors that, occurred were rectified without delay, and both teams were very pleased with the experiment. In the opinion of many delegates to the New Zealand Chess Council the time has come for a change, and the English notation should be given preference over the numerical system, the latter only being used in matches where both clubs wish to play under it. A move in tills direction will. It is understood, be made at the annual meeting of the New’ Zealand Chess Association that is to be held short13*.
