COUNCIL DECIDES ON PETROL STORAGE LIMITS.

Under instructions from the By-Laws Committee of the City Council an inspection lias been made of the majority of the petrol stations in the city including practically all the larger stations with a view to ascertaining the maximum quantity of petrol that the committee would recommend the council to allow to be stored. The opinion of the proprietors was unanimous in so far as their desire to be allowed to continue with tanks of approximately 500 gallons capacity each. It was pointed out that smaller tanks, in the c-asc of more popular brands of spirit, would be insufficient to cater for the demands for week-ends, and quite inadequate at such periods as Easter and Christmas. Several proprietors stated that they considered the larger tanka entailed less risk as they required fi!l- - a proportionately smaller number of times. The committee reported at last night’* meeting of the council that it had decided to consider each application, on ii« merits. With regard to the lay-out of the stations and the style of buildings erected the committee recommended that the Town Planning Committee should insist upon a more desirable type of building, preferably in brick or concrete, tiled with white tiles for about, four feet from the ground level on oil parts of the building facing streets or public places. The report was adopted and the recommendation approved.
