CASEY WINS TITLE OF N.Z. MIDDLE-WEIGHT.

BEATS L. M'DONALD, HOLDER, ON POINTS. (Special to the ** Star.”) WELLINGTON. June 21. Before a pood house at the Town Hall last night Harry Casey won the professional middleweight boxing championship of New Zealand from Lackie M’Donald, the holder. It was a hard fought contest, but Casey, except in perhaps two rounds, was the superior man and there was a goodly margin of points in his favour at the finish. He was too fast for M'Donald and beat the champion at both boxing and fighting. He showed rare judgment in countering M’Donald s straight left and time after time either took the power out of a punch oy the sway of his body or slipped beneath it and scored to the head or body. Casey varied his attack more than his opponent and several times gained points with unexpected leads. Casey’s evasive work was more skilful and he was continually timing his punches better. On occasions, however, he ran into a nasty left, but M’Donald seldom scored with his right, which was too slow in coming across. The contest was the best given in Wellington by boxers over the lightweight class for several years. There was much more open boxing than usual and both took risks.

Casey, who looked the fitter of the pair, scaled lOst 9£lb, M’Donald went list 51b, but he seemed to be carrying a little too much

The verdict for Casey was loudly cheered-

SADNESS AND MIRTH. God sent Ilis singers upon earth With songs of sadness and of mirth. —Longfellow.
