IN MEMORY OF 35,000 SOLDIERS.

CROSS OF SACRIFICE UNVEILED ON HILL WHERE WAR RAGED. By Telegraph.—Press Assn.—Copyright. Aus. and X.Z. Cable Association. (Received June 20, 9.20 a.m.) LONDON, June 19. A message from Ypres states that Mr Dyett unveiled the Cross of Sacrifice Memorial erected in memory of 35,000 of the Empire’s dead, who were killed in the later actions of the Ypres salient. Many of them have no known graves. The nucleus of the cemetery is a few battle graves round the highest of several concrete German blockhouses, in the centre of the heaviest fighting, over which the War Cross has been erected. The wall surrounding the graves contains a stone inscribed: “Their Names Liveth Evermore,” and also panels containing the names of the killed, supplementing those inscribed at Meningate. A small semi-circular apse was consecrated to the memory of the New Zealand dead. Those present included members of the Service League., the burgomasters of Passchendaele and Zonnebeke, and many inhabitants. The Rev F. Molyneux blessed the cross and buglers sounded the “Last Pbst” and “Reveille.” Tynecot Cemetery’s known graves include five winners of the Victoria Cross and also 1344 Australians and 508 New Zealanders. The apse is inscribed with the names of 1179 New Zealanders, who fell in the Battle of Broodseinde, the first battle of Passcliendciele.
