Mrs Hugh Vickerman, Wellington, is the guest of her sister, Mrs B. Whitcombe, Papanui. Mrs Donald Robertson, who was a guest at St Elmo, Christchurch, has returned to Havelock North. Miss Edna Langmuir, Te Awamutu, who has been the guest of Miss Marjory Miller, Sprevdon, has returned to the North Island. Mr and Mrs D. C. Macfarlane, of North Canterbury, are staying at Warner’s Hotel. Miss K. M. Tefft, of Oakland. California, is an overseas visitor at Warner’s | Hotel. } Mrs Gavin Murray and son and Miss i Campbell (Brisbane) are amongst the guests at the United Service Hotel. Mr and Mrs D. Stowell arrived from Timaru last evening, and are staying at the United Service Hotel. On Saturday afternoon. Miss June Long, of Whiteleigh Avenue, was the guest of honour at a birthday party given by her uncle, Mr C. Greening. The supper-room and tables were prettily decorated with rose-pink and gold streamers, and each guest received a paper hat to match. The time was passed with games, singing, recitations, dancing and music. Those present were: Misses June and Vera Long, Maisie, Mona, Isobelle and Norma Rouse, Lola Cox, Alice Turnbull, Dulcie Maine, Betty Cox, Mearle Brown and Grace Pluck; Messrs Vernon Long, Laurie and Maurice Cox, James and Hector Long, Tre-'-or Bench, Harold Turnbull and Ceci. Brown. An enjoyable evening was spent on Saturday, when Mr and Mrs Clinton entertained a number of friends at their home in Templeton in honour of the birthday of their daughter Leila, The evening was spent in musical items, games and competitions and dancing. Among those present were: Mr and Mrs N. Clinton, Mr and Mrs A. Walker, Mrs Kempthorne ; Misses Chrissie Ivempthorne, Leila Clinton, Rosie Clinton, Jean Brown, Doris Brown and Edna Ealam; Messrs H. Kempthorne, Ronnie Kempthorne, William Brown, John Ealam, Alan Clark and J. Clark. After a dainty supper was served the evening was brought to a close with the singing of “Auld Lang Syne.” Guests at the Hotel Federal include: —Mr R. K. Mr and Mrs 11. L. Wiggins, of Head Street, Sumner, yesterday afternoon received news of the death of their daughter Meg. who was on the nursing staff of the Wellington Hospital. Until about six months ago, the deceased was amongst the most popular young ladies of the borough. She was an active member of the Golf and Tennis Clubs, and was known to a wide circle of friends. A fortnight ago she came home to celebrate her twenty-first birthday, and her unexpected death has come as a great shock to all who knew her.

Miss Ilall, Director of Kindergartens in Christchurch, is in Dunedin attending a refresher course. Miss Betty Hobbs, Papanui, is visitmg Mrs Mandeno, at Belleknowes, Dunedin. Mrs Peppier (Cashmere Hills) is visiting Dunedin on business in connection with the Kindergarten Association Mrs A. J. Lawrence, who was in Christchurch for a few days, returned to the south to-day. Mr and Mrs M’Master, Pigeon Bay are making a brief stay in Christchurch i and are at the United Service Hotel. Mbs Andrew Anderson and Miss Anderson are recent arrivals staying at, the United Service Hotel. Mrs Readie (Gibson Street, Timaru), who has been visiting her mother, Mrs W. Atkinson, Christchurch, has return ed to her home. Miss Grace Fryer (Knowles Street) left last night with Mrs Denton Tanner for Hawke’s Bay, where she will spend some months. Miss M. Denton, who was the guest of Mrs Armstrong (Chalmers Street, Timaru), has returned to Christchurch. Arcadian Dance will be held in the Cafe Cecil, High Street, to-night. There will be a special prize given to the winner of the lucky spot dance Teddy Jones's Band will provide spirited music. Learners will be taught free of charge between 7.30 and 8 p.m. At the Cashmere Tennis Club’s courts yesterday afternoon, the redoubtable Avonside B team, who are always ready for a match, tried conclusions with the Cashmere B team, whom they defeated by 96 games to 87. Cashmere led in the first round, but in the second round they were overtaken by their opponents. Both teams were entertained at tea in the club’s pavilion. The Avonside players were: Mrs Ilerdman, Mrs Fuller, Mrs Geddes, Miss Dinnicom.be, Miss D Sharpe, Miss Morland, Miss W. Angas, Miss Edmonston, and the Cashmere players were: Mrs Peppier, Mrs Peter ! Wilson, Mrs Reg. Morgan, Mrs Morri- , son, Mrs Howartli, Mrs Hodges, Miss MacMillan, and Miss C. Fisher. •
