THIEF HAS HIS NAME SUPPRESSED.

“ HE STOLE TO GET HIS OWN BACK.” “ It seems tnat the thefts were committed t>uiely to ‘ pay a man out,’ and in view of the fact that the accused’s record is otherwise gcod, I shall suppress his name,” said Mr 11. P. Lawry, S.M., in th Magistrate’s Court this morning, when a. man of 21 years of age appeared on two charges of theft from his employer. Chief Detective Lewis said that accused had deserted from the navy, but had been dealt with for that. He had evidently been under the impression that he had been unfairly treated by his employer, a farmer, and he returned to the farm to get his own back. There he had stolen a suit case and its contents and a shotgun and cartridges, to the total value of £lO 14s 6d. He had not taken them away, but had left them nearby, and they had been recovered. The probation officer said that he had interviewed accused, whose father was a police missionary in Cape Town. The man had been in continual employment since his desertion from the navy (for which he had not been penalised), and it was a case for probation. Accused was convicted and admitted to probation for one year.
