AMATEUR BOXERS GIVE EXHIBITIONS.
Mr .T. Hanley, who has* a school of instruction in boxing t\,t his premises. Fitzgerald Avenue, held an invitation evening on Wednesday and provided an excellent programme of events for the patrons, who attended in largo numbers. These “evenings” are attracting a deal of attention from followers of the amateur side of the sport, and are providing many novices with the opportunity of gaining experience before appearing in public. The co-operation between the Christchurch Amateur Boxing Club and the local instructors is creating a widespread interest in amateur boxing, and it is confidently expected that the work that is going on will result in Canterbury representatives occupying a higher position in Dominion championship events than has been the case for The bouts arranged by Mr Hanley were as follows:—A. Birchfleld v. W. Carey, F. Chick v. G. Wright, F. Davidson v. J. Silvester, Connor v. Flderson, G. Wright v. C. Knight, A. Parlces v. H. Ledgard, W. Carey v. H. Todd, F. Chick v. J. Brown. In addition, those two clever youngsters, the Connor brothers, save an entertaining three-round spar, which was as energetic and willing as though they were competing for a valuable prize. All the bouts were keenly contested, and though a number of the contestants were only novices, all of these gave promise of becoming very capable boxers with the experience they will gain from these competitions. The next ‘•evening” will be held at Mr J. Thompson’s rooms, on May 14, when, provided a permit is available, several special bouts for prizes will be decided.
