EVENTS OF THE WEEK.

BOROUGH COUNCIL. f Tr;e installation c£ the Mayor and I Councillors of the Borough of New Brighton took place on Wednesday evening. Mr M. Middleton, returning officer, declared Captain A. W. Owles duly elected Mayor of the Borough of New Brighton. After signing the declaration Captain Owles had the insignia of office passed over to him by the ex-May or, Mr J. Gamble. Tee following councillors were declared elected and signed the declaration: Councillors G. W. Bishop, E. L. Smith, J. C. Scott, F. D. Muirson, E. ■A. M. Leaver, A. E. La-wry, H. A. Glasson, R. A. Stokes and T. Robins. As guests of the Mayor and Mayoress, Mr and Mrs A. W. Owles, the councillors and their wives enjoyed a social evening in Joyland. An enjoyable programme of instrumental and vocal items was given. HOUSEHOLDERS’ MEETING. The annual meeting of New Brighton householders was held in the schoolroom on Monday evening. The chairman of the School Committee, Mr 11. A- Glasson, presided. The annual balance-sheet showed a debit of £ls. The chairman reported that the present position of the proposed dental clinic for the school was that they would have approximately £SO when the subsidies were received on the money the committee had raised during the year. Credit was due to the lady members of the committee for raising funds by their successful euchre parties. Dr Telford had promised to inspect a room the committee had in view for the clinic and give his opinion whether it was suitable or not. A lengthy discussion took place over the advisability of discarding the annual prize-giving and using the funds so made available for a school library. The meeting decided to retain the prize-giving and on a collection being taken up the sum of £2O was raised, together with special prizes donated by the Mayor, Captain Owles, Mr J. Gamble, Mr J. H. Shaw and Mrs M. Moses. Mr A. W. Dunkley, in moving a recommendation to the incoming committee, that they should urge on the Government the necessity of a junior high school for New Brighton, stated that Sumner had only about 300 children and they had a high school, whereas New Brighton had double that number. 600, and no high school. The motion -was carried unanimously. ANGLICAN CHURCH. The annual meeting of parishioners of the New Brighton district was held in the parish room on Tuesday evening. The vicar, the Rev. Maclavertv, in opening the meeting, expressed his pleasure in meeting the parishioners again. The churchwarden’s report stated that the annual expenses had been materially increased by the charges for interest and sinking fund on the church building loan from the C.P.T., the result being a debit balance of £73 19s lid, which would have to be met by the parish. About £BOO would be required for the expenses of the coming year. The report and balancesheet were adopted. The vicar reappointed Mr Bargrove as his warden, and announced that Mr who had seen over 50 years of service as a church officer in various parishes, was resigning. Mr F. Ward was unanimously elected parishioners’ warden. Ihe following members being elected for nomination to the Bishop as vestrymen : Rev. W. F. Knowles, Messrs Hocklev, Scott, Samuels, de Roo, Robins, Miles, Palk, Ballantine, and L. Ward. CIRCUS. A novel event for New Brighton will bs the circus to be held on the section next to the post office, Sea View Road, on Monday evening only. May 9. The artists in Carian’s Circus and Rodeo include Queensland Harry, George Carian, Harry Cahill (Australian cowboy rider), Jack Lane (New Zealand’s horseman) and Miss Ruby Stewart. An attraction for the children will be Joey, the Australian bucking donkey. A competition for local horsemen will be held. ON DIT— That of the first New Brighton Borough Council, there are only two membprs still alive, the Mayor, Mr A. W. Owles, and Mr G. M’lntyre. That in the days of the old horse trams it cost eighteepence return to New Brighton. That an original motion at the householders’ meetiing was moved by Mr Ainsworth. The motion was that all candidates for the School Committee should pay 10s to the prize fund, and, if- elected, £l. CARD EVENINIGS. The new School Committee have decided to continue the euchre parties at the school. There was a good attendance on Thursday evening, and the prize-winners were: —Mrs Scott, Mrs Parsons and Mr Scott. There was a good attendance at the Beresford Club’s euchre party at Joyland this week. The hall was _ well heated, making the playing conditions very comfortable. After supper the prizes were distributed as follows: Mrs De Roo 1, Mrs Hill 2, Mrs Nankeyille 3, Mrs Derrett 4, Mr Seales 5. LADIES’ PHYSICAL CULTURE. The second weekly physical culture class was held in Joyland on Thursday evening, when several new members were enrolled. There was keen competition in games and drill, which the members thoroughly enjoyed. ' . SOUTH BRIGHTON NOTES. The South Brighton Progress League met in the hall last Tuesday evening. Mr W. Ilulme presided over a fair attendance. The chairman remarked on the success of three of the members in obtaining seats on the Borough Council i at the recent election and two on the j School Committee at the householders meeting. It ■was decided to ask the new council to proceed with various works in South Brighton. , PERSONAL. I Mesdames A. W. Scarr, Pine Avenue; G. Weavers, Blake Street; and S.Gramxuer, Richmond Terrace, have returned home after spending their holidays in Auckland. _____ I

V. NORTH BEACH NOTES.

SCHOOL. The annual meeting of householders was well attended and keen interest was manifested in the report presented by the outgoing committee. All the members of last 3’ear’s committee who were nominated were re-elected. The new committee consists of Mesdames A. E. M’Gillivray and S. G. Goring, the Rev W. F. Knowles, Messrs J. F. Eamcs, A. Florance, S. S. Freeborn (secretary), R. Stringer, E. A. M. Leaver (chairman) and R. Parker.

f Special reference was made to the I comprehensive report furnished by the secretary, and a motion of appreciation of his services was carried. Mr A. Florance, who so successfully organised “ working bees ” in the past to improve the school ground, is again asking for volunteers to clear a ground for football at the rear of the school on the afternoon of Saturday, May 14. Those willing to help are asked to attend at two o'clock. The ladies will provide the workers with afternoon tea. TRAMWAY SERVICE. At the meeting of householders on Monday evening the question of the removal of the tram line from Burw’ood to the sea was discussed and the following resolution was carried unanimously—“ That the Government be asked to withhold granting the Order-in-Council permitting the Tramway Board to remove the line from Burwood to the sea until the board enters into a definite undertaking to provide some other form of transport for residents in the affected area.” BUS SERVICE. The patrons of the Wainoni Road bus service have been patiently awaiting the arrival of the new bus. It is understood that the new bus will arrive from Timaru this week-end and go immediately into service. PERSONALS. Miss Waterston, Mrs R. Waterston and her daughter are leaving for a short holiday. The Rev W. F. Knowles has been indisposed and was unable to attend the School Committee meeting. Miss Edna B. Herrick, who left North Beach for the North Island some time since is on a visit to relatives and friends in Christchurch.
