Mr and Mrs C. Clabburn, of Wellington, are guests at Warner’s Hotel. Sir Francis and Lady Boys will leave early this week for Auckland, cn route for England. Miss Herrick, Auckland, who was the guest of the Misses Scott, returned to the north on Saturday evening. The following have been staying at Mount Pleasant House: —Mr and Mrs Calvert, Christchurch; Mr and Mrs ' Cox, Rangiora; Misses Thompson (3), Mr and Mrs Burrows, Christchurch. The engagement is announced of Xita, youngest daughter of Mr and Mrs John Fleming, “St Scobie,” Cheviot, to George If. W. Wilcox, Ashburton, eldest son of Mr and Mrs Henry H. Wilcox, “ The Poplars,” West Bridgford, England. A surprise party visited the home of ; Mr and Mrs Fred Eliott on Thursday night and a verj' enjoyable time was spent in games, singing and dancing. A concert was given on Thursday evening in the Sumner Town Ilall by a party organised by Miss Agnes Richardson from the members of the Christchurch Amateur Operatic Society. The numbers were well received and a repeat programme is being arranged. . Amongst the items were choruses, solos • and humorous sketches by the following:—Mr Alan Brown, Miss Madge Wilson, Mr Fred Hale, Miss Edna Pcdder, • Miss P. Hollander, Miss K. Doherty, •Mr Wyn Cowlishaw, Mr Bernard Renj nell and Mr Frank Morrison. Mr J. | Nevill Cohen mystified the audience j with tricks with cards and handker--1 chiefs. The proceeds were devoted to I the Borough Dental Clinic.

Mr awl Mrs Richard Allen, Fcndalton, left by the. Ruapehu for a trip to England. Mr and Mrs W'alter Monk, of Abie’s Irish Rose Company, are staying at the Rotherfield Hotel. Mr and Mrs A. P. Dawson and two sons are guests at the United Service Hotel. Miss E. Lomas, of St Albans, will leave by the Moeraki to-day for an extended tour of Australia and America. Sir George and I.ady Clifford and Mr Walter Clifford, who went to 1 imaru last week for the races, have returned to Christchurch. Miss Elsie Nimmo (Dunedin) is at present the guest of Miss Doreen Ilight, Rugby Street. Miss Anne Morell. who has been staying with Miss Right, returned to Dunedin cn Saturday. The annual bazaar and fancy’ fair held at the Cathedral Grammar School was opened on Saturday afternoon b\* Mrs John Guthrie. The Rev S. Parr explained that the proceeds this year would be devoted to the new fives court, and the balance would be given to foreign missions. Mrs S. Parr dispensed afternoon tea at tables decorated with vases cf Michaelmas daisies and chrysanthemums. She was assisted by four of the pupils—L. Newman, S. Bartlett, B. Winstone and C. Stevens. A novel attraction was a diverting cinema show given by the head master. There was a large attendance and the various stalls were well patronised. In the playground the shooting galleries, coconut shies and the time-honoured Aunt Sally and Uncle Tom provided amusement. W. Peters disposed of a hind-quarter of lamb. Mrs Parr found a ready sale for flowers and the following stalls did excellent business:—Stocking stall, Mrs B. Burgess; work. Miss Ethel Musgrave, variety, the Misses D. and A. Cooper; produce, D. J. Bradshaw and C. W. Restieaux; cakes, P. Woodward and M. Bruorton; sweets, the Misses Joyce Blundell. Ruth Taylor and Dorothy Joynt; books, S. Nelley and Dangerfield; ice-cream, Bassett and Taylor.
