FUNERAL OF LATE REV C. ABERNETHY.

There was a very large gathering of people at Litnvood Cemetery yesterday afternoon, when the burial of the late Rev Christopher Abernethy took place. The lengthy cortege of motor-cars, totalling over fifty, left his late residence in Cambridge Terrace and, before the casket was taken from the house, a brief service was held inside. At the graveside the Rev Samuel La wry and the Rev W. . Greenslade, chairman of the North Canterburv Methodist Synod, conducted the scr vice. After the formal service the former sai’d that*he had known a great number of good men, but he had counted their late brother as amongst the most loyal, true and Christian of all. lie had been one of the most consistent and holy of men. and his departure from this earth was to be very deeply regretted. His life had been an inspiration, and the speaker prayed that his footsteps would be followed. lie asked the gathering to sing two verses of “Jesu, Lover of My Soul.” A prayer was offered by Mr Greenslade. Among the ministers present were the Revs Thomas Fee. J. Harris. C. E. Ward, A. Hay, L. 13. Neale, W. 11. Speer, W. J. Wiliams, S. J. Werren, p T. Reed and M. Rugby Pratt. In addition there were present several I.)o minion and local legislators, leading lavmen of the Church and business and professional men. The following acted as pall bearers: R. C. Abernethy. Mr G. P. Parsonson, Hr A’Court, the Rev W. 11. Speer, the Rev M. Rugby Pratt and Mr J- Jamieson. Wreaths were placed on the grave from the Methodist Preachers’ (hiarterlv Meeting, the Papanui Methodist Church, the Rev C. E. Ward. Mr and Mrs F. W. Freeman. Mrs Barrell and familv, Mrs Jamieson and family, Mr and Mrs Iv. W. Robinson, the Port and [• jtv Committee and the family of the late Kev L. Hudson.
