The liner Megantic, with General Duncan and the headquarters staff of the Shanghai Defence Force and 1600 Home troops, crept to the British wharf in darkness, following a record trip from Singapore. The ship speeded up on account of the change for the worse in the local situation. Shanghai harbour is fast being congested with transports and warships. All British troops arriving parade the main streets of the International Settlement, prior to billeting. The- war situation improved over the week-end, the Shantung troops throwing themselves on the Cantonese south-west front at Sun-kiang. thirty miles from Shanghai, where fierce fighting is progressing. M. Gallons. Russian military adviser, is reported to be directing the offensive against Shanghai.
