The. chief-detective said that accused had been taking girls to Chinamen’s gardens, end he had been found in bed with three young girls at the one time. Valueless Cheques. Three weeks ago John Francis Holcombe, aged twenty-six. described as a Hollywood motion picture director, pleaded guilty to obtaining £3O by false pretences. lie issued three valueless cheques, stating in court that he was a Rockefeller. Efforts were made by cable to secure funds from American relatives to make good the amounts, but no reply Jiaving been received Holcombe appeared this morning for sentence, when he was also charged with a breach of probation for two charges of false pretences in Wellington last year. He was sentenced to terms of imprisonment totalling three months.
