A CHRONICLE OF SOCIAL EVENTS

Mr and Mrs G. R. Cracroft Wilson have returned from the North Island.

Mr and Mrs A. Millow (Dunedin), Mr H. J. F. Williamson (Sydney), Miss O. Barnes (Timaru), Miss E. Norden (Nel son), and Miss J. Wilson and Miss C. Wilson (Timaru) are among the recent arrivals at Kenilworth.

A most enjoyable kitchen evening, organised by Misses N. Burnett and L. Shute, was recently held at the residence of Mrs W. Carson, 84, Ollivier’s Road, Linwood, the occasion being to celebrate the approaching marriage of her daughter, Mj-rtle. The evening was spent in competitions, games and music. Miss Carson was the recipient of many useful gifts. The evening was brought to a close by the singing of “ Auld Lang Syne.” Amongst those present were:—Mesdames W. Bailey, E. S. Carson, F. Carson, C. Shepphcrd, D. Sojgers, E. Scarf, Misses Nelly Burnett. Lynda Shute, Myrtle Carson, Gladys A Rose, Mary Garside, Hetty Kelly, Janet Maxwell, Roma Proore, Ivy Berryman, Marjory Robb, May Kemp, Isabella Clarke; Messrs A. Bailey, Jack Rose, C. Sheppard, Frank Carson, Nora Carson, A. Cox, Murray Carson, Allan Carson and L. Jones. Following is a list of recent visitors staying at York House, Hanmer Springs:—Mr and Mrs Gale, Misses Jocelyn and Peggy Gale (Christchurch), Mr and Mrs G. W. Lang, Masters D. and R. Forgie (Christchurch), Mrs O. Youdale (Timaru), Mrs Benbow and Miss Top wood (Ashburton), Mr and Mrs E. French (Christchurch), Mr R. Venning, Miss D. Ilowarth (Christchurch), Mrs Berry (Durham, South Africa), Mrs M. Brandon, Miss Mabel Brandon (Dunedin), Mr and Mrs Alien (Christchurch). Mr P. W. Sharpe and Rev J. Guy (Christchurch), Mr J. Connor (Blackball).

A pleasant party was held recently, at the residence of Mr and Mrs J. 11. Mayfield, Mather Street, Spreydon, to celebrate the coming-of-agc of their 3'oungest daughter, Edith. Decorations of mauve and blue provided colour in the rooms, and the tables were artistically arranged. The usual toasts were honoured. Amongst those present were:—Mr and Mrs J. 11. Mayfield, Mr and Mrs G. Baxter; Mesdames Robertson and Bridge; Misses Pascoe, Rossiter (2), Mayfield (2), Petrie (2). E. Robertson, M. Bowman. Baxter, Fitzsimmons, Kitson and M’Kessar; Messrs Andrews, M’Kessar, Vince, L. Mayfield and L. Barclay.

Mrs W. S. Bean, who is leaving this evening for a visit to America, was the guest of honour at an enjoyable morning tea party given by Mrs Keith Garrick. The table was artistically decorated with roses and maidenhair fern. Mrs Garrick presented Mrs Bean with a bouquet of everlasting flowers to take as a memento of the occasion. A novel idea was the use of a number of ribbons attached to the bouquet and leading to each guest, and the guests tied small parcels to the ends and when the bouquet was presented, Mrs Bean drew the ribbons, to find a number of dainty handkerchiefs as a reminder of the happy occasion, and a sachet to put them in. Mrs Garrick's guests were: —Mrs W. S. Bean, Lady Kinsey, Mrs Watson, Mrs 11. T. J. Thacker, Mrs Fraer, Mrs George Rutherford, Mrs M. S. Brown, Miss M'Chven, Miss Wright, Mrs F. Clark, and Mrs R. E. M’Dougall. A large number of guests assembled at the Dorothy Tea Rooms recently to celebrate the coming-of-age of Elsie, only daughter of Mr and Mrs F. Johnson. The guest of honour wore a dainty frock of dephinium-blue lace over silk of the same shade, the same colour being used i'n the decoration of the supper tables. The usual toasts were honoured. During supper, Mr W. Kellaway presented the guest of the evening with a gold key. The evening was spent in dancing and games, the lucky spot waltz being won by Miss D. Hendy and Mr C. Roberts. Miss Elsie Johnson was the recipient of many beautiful gifts. Mr J. Ilollinger and Mr G. Pollock carried out the duties of M.C.’s, and music was supplied by Mr Williams. A happy time was brought to a close by the singing of “Auld Lang Syne.” Those present included: Mesdames F. Johnson, W. Kellaway (Hororata), R. Keller and A. Parker (Hororata), Misses E. Johnson, E. Mr and Mrs Bloom, Sydney, lei Christchurch this morning for the Wes Coast.

Mr and Mrs M. Symons, London, who have been spending a few days in Christchurch, left for Dunedin this morning.

Mr aqfi Mrs G. G. Wallace, Wellington, Mrs Basil Cadoux, Mrs A. Basten and Miss C. Basten, Auckland, arrived in Christchurch this morning from the north, and are staj’ing at the United Service Hotel.

Mrs 11. Porter and Miss Porter, U.S.A., left Christchurch this morning for the West Coast.

Colonel Murdoch and Miss Murdoch, Sydney, left Christchurch this morning, en route to Marlborough.

Sir Robert Anderson and Miss Jean Anderson, Sydney, arrived in Christchurch this morning, and are staying at the Clarendon Hotel.

Mr and Mrs F. Milner, Oamaru, and Mrs Bailie are recent arrivals staying at the Clarendon Hotel.

Miss Jean Macfarlane will arrive home on Tuesday after a holiday spent in the North Island visiting her brother, Mr George Macfarlane.

Mrs M. E. Fermer, a delegate from Auckland in connection with the National Council of Women, arrived in Christchurch this morning and is the guest of Mrs Peppier, sen., Cashmere.

Miss M. Gibson, Timaru, is the guest of Mrs Irvine, Christchurch. Miss Thurston, C.8.E., R.R.C., late matron at Pukeora, will leave by the Makura next week en route to England. Mrs Bean, of Addington, Christchurch, and Miss Lulu Bean will leave b}- the same boat, and they will travel through America together.

Mrs Frank Merrie (Mansfield Avenue), who has been visiting Mt. Cook, is returning to Christchurch to-day.

Mrs St. Barbe More (Adelaide) is the guest of her aunt, Mrs Alex. Macfarlanc, Weka Street, Fendalton. Mrs J. S. Ashmore (Te Awamutu) is arriving in Christchurch to-morrow to visit her mother, Mrs F. E. Greenfield, St. Albans.

Miss Doris Herbert Brown (Mt Thomas) is visiting Mrs W. Chrystall. Colombo Street North.

Mrs Thomas Allen (Waikari), who has been visiting her mother, Mrs M'Gillivray, Knowles Street, returned home yesterday.

Mrs R. C. Bishop and Miss M. Bishop (Christchurch) are staying at the Midland Hotel, Wellington. Mr and Mrs L. J. Shearman (Wroxton Terrace, Fendalton) are leaving on Monday for Wellington to joint the Makura on an extended tour of America, Great Britain and the Continent. Mrs Hehry Acland (Park Terrace) has returned from a visit to the North Island. Mr and Mrs J. R. Evans (Chester Street) are leaving on Thursday for a trip to Napier, Rotorua and Taupo. Mrs Elsie Cooke, who recently severed her connection with the staff of the Economic, Cashel Street, was made the recipient of a presentation by the staff. On behalf of her fellow-workers, Mrs Ilibbcrt presented Mrs Cooke with a handsome oak and silver tray and wished her good fortune in the future. Mr 11. Holland, M.P., and Mrs Holland are leaving shortly for a trip to Adelaide. Mr and Mrs F. J. Carr, Matson’s Road, Papanui, left last evening for a trip to the North Island. Mr Carr will attend the Methodist Conference, which opens in Auckland on March 3. While in that city Mr and Mrs Carr will be the guests of the Rev. 11. Ryan and Mrs Ryan, of Remuera. Mrs S. Gelling, St Andrew’s Square, who has been staying at Rangiora, will return to Christchurch to-day. Mrs Carrick Wedderspoon. Merivale, is the guest of Mrs 11. E. Wedele, Temuka. Miss Phyllis Lett arrived in Christchurch last evening, and i's staying at Warner’s Hotel. Miss Hilda Otley, St Andrew’’s Square, is spending a few days at Hanmer Springs. The Beckenham division of St John Ambulance met on Thursday evening. The divisional surgeon, Dr Bevan Brow'n, was welcomed back to the division, after which he gave an interesting address. The following visitors arc registered at the Hotel Federal: Misses M’Morland, Reilly and Slatter (Nelson), Mr and Mrs G. 11. Best, Mrs and Miss M’lntosh (Wellington), Mr and Mrs Steer (Greymouth), Mr Lindsay, Mrs and Miss Black (Nelson) and Miss Hunter (Invercargill).
