TRAIN HITS CAR AT CROSSING.
FIVE PEOPLE HAVE NARROW ESCAPE • FROM DEATH. (Special to the “Star.”) AUCKLAND, February 23. A remarkable escape was experienced by five occupants of a motorcar which was struck by a train at the Mangere crossing shortly after eleven last evening. The driver was John Edward 1 listed, commercial traveller, the other occupants being his sister and Miss Slade, Epsom, Miss Rowe, Herne Bay, and Miss Wallace, Remu*The vehicle was almost over the crossing when the engine of a train travelling in the direction of Auckland crashed into it and flung the occupants on to the road. Histed suffered fairly severe injuries to his back and was taken to Auckland Hospital. Miss Rowe had also to bo taken to hospital, where it was found ■necessary to insert stiches in a cut across the face. Miss Slade was able to proceed home after abrasions had been dressed. Beyond a se-\*ere shaking, the other two occupants were unhurt. The car was badly damaged. '
