It is understood that ,a formal request has been made to President Diaz., of Nicaragua, for the United States to establish a protectorate over the country. State Department officials, while declining to comment, intimated that lengthy occupation of Nicaragua was inevitable in order to assure the country’s stability, whether or not a treaty was ultimately negotiated.
