The wonderful recovery of France from war desolation is described by M* Tardieu, Minister of Public Works, who is in charge of the Department of Dc vastated Regions. At. the time of the armistice there were half a million houses and nine thousand factories requiring to be repaired or completely rebuilt, while apart from the reclamation of land and the 1 reconstruction of coal mines there were 35.000 miles of roads and 15,000 miles of railways to be the estimated sum required being 55,000,000.000 francs. M. Tardieu, speaking at a banquet at Rheims. said that out of this total 73.000.000.000 francs had been spent and France had been able to make good out of her own resources practically the whole of the devastation. The result was that the devastated districts were now contributing 0,000,000,000 francs annually in taxation.
