BATHING FACILITIES AT NEW BRIGHTON.
To the Editor. Sir,—l notice from a report of the last meeting of the New Brighton Borough Council that a deputation from the Surf Club suggested the construction of a bath and dressing rooms. Very good, but why did one of the speakers, to further his ends, refer to the New Brighton Pier? Has this gentleman ever lor himself seen the facilities provided? hie says it is well known that ladies ate often the victims of petty thieving, and that there is no place oi real safety where they can leave their clothing. He does not seem to know much about the pier and its working, yet he claims such a long residential qualification! I think I can safely say he has never once been on the pier and seen for himself our bathing cubicles. Then there was a statement about the condition of the pier cubicles. X might tell Mr Owles that only once in my sixteen years on t.he New Brighton Pier have I received a complaint from the Health authorities, and never once, including and during his term of oftice as a councillor. have I ever had any written complaint from that body, though on several occasions they visited me unawares. E might tell Mr Owles that with the exception of one seaside resort not many miles from Christchurch, our bathing facilities compare with the best in New Zealand. Why does he not confine himself to his subject? Although I have not been quite as long a resident of New Brighton as the “ skipper,” he has still to show me any progress made under his care.— am, etc.. W. L. A. TAYLOR. New Brighton Pier.
