The Banks Peninsula Racing Club has secured a very satisfactory list of nominations for the meeting to be held at Motukarara on Saturday, March 5. Pair sized fields arc assured for all the galloping races, while there will be the customary big crowd of competitors in each of the trotting events. * Hi * Hi * Limerick continues to get through useful tasks, which arc now becoming more serious. According to present intentions, it is pretty certain that he will make a trip to Sydney, for the autumn meeting of the Australian Jockey Club. 3 £ lie is at his best his meeting with Rampion in the St Leger will be one of the attractions of the Easter fixture at Randwick.

Happy Days has joined J. W. Jennings's team at Riccarton. After some racing on the flat, he will be got ready for a jumping campaign in the winter.

F. D. Jones has recommissioned the two-year-old filly Love in the Mist, by Martian from She looks in healthy condition, after a few weeks’ rest, and she will be got ready to race in the autumn.

Count Cavour has been working on quietly since he returned from his unsuccessful trip to Wingatui. He looks in good order and he may make amends, before the end of the season, for his recent failures.

Rapier bears a bright appearance and obviously he has thrived on the racing and travelling he has had lately. It will be no surprise if he wins another big race this season. As a preliminary, he may have a run with the sprinters at Motukarara early next month.

Centrepiece has had an easy time since he returned home from Wingatui. He will soon be moving along again, In preparation for important engagements in the autumn.

The Wairarapa sportsman, Mr W. E. Bid will, has sold the three-year-old gelding Direction, by Elevation—Miss Mildred, to an Indian owner. Direction was shipped this week to Sydney, for transhipment to a steamer bound for Singapore, after which he will have a train journey of about 300 miles to his new quarters.

At the Masterton Show this week, Mr W. R. Kemball’s Hymestra, by ITymettus—Straga, was awarded the championship in the class for thoroughbred stallions, while the championship for brood mares went to Princess Pat, by All Black—Martian Princess.

Reports from Auckland state that there is a prospect of Te Kara returning to the race track. When he pulled up lame after the Auckland Cup, it was thought his racing career was at an end, but the trouble has yielded to treatment.

Alonsoa is a promising hack and showed quite a lot of speed at Rotorua. Sho is a half sister to Barometer by Catmint and looks as though she is going to be good. * * * *• Reports from Melbourne state that M. M’Carten will be on Calmest in the Newmarket Handicap and on Royal Feast in all his autumn engagements. The latter won the Maribymong Plate and is reputed to be the best two-year-old in Australia. * * * * The construction of a stewards’ and members' stand at Wingatui is to be commenced in the near future. The building will be an up-to-date structure, and will involve the expenditure of something in the neighbourhood of £12,000. * * * * The Otago gelding Overhaul, by Tractor from Take Down, is proving very useful on the flat, but may find his real mission in life when it comes to timber topping. He seems just the sort to improve with age, as he is a big framed gelding that requires time to come to his full strength. *- * H* It is understood that a substantial offer has been refused by Mr D. P. Wilson for Black Duke. * * * * It is said that over a hundred applications have been received for the position of secretary to the Dunedin Jockey Club. * He * * The well-known Victorian rider W. Duncan, was recently suspended for one month for attempting to improve his position at the barrier. * * * Hi There seems to be a growing demand for M. M’Carten’s services in Australia, and it is doubtful if he will ever return to New Zealand except on a holiday trip. * * * * A recent innovation to Sydney racecourses is a motor coach, built especially to transport racehorses and other live stock, which made its first appearance at Moorefield. Placed on the roads by the Livestock Motor Transport Company, its accommodation for three horses was filled by Cherry Ripe, Ranmore, and a member of Jk J. Marsden's team, and, needless to say, great public interest was displayed in the truck (says the Sydney “Referee"’). This means of conveyance has been in vogue in England and France for some time, but it is new to Sydney trainers, and those who patronised it were unanimous in their opinions that the motor had decided advantages over train travelling. * * * * In the last twelve months various opinions have been expressed regarding the relative merits of English and Australian horses. Some of the views were not altogether flattering to our side of the question, writes “Fernhill” in the Melbourne “Globe,” but it is consoling to know that practical men like James Scobie and Frank Dempsey saw nothing in the Old Country to convince them that our best horses could not hold their own with the leading performers in England. Scobie is inclined to_ think that most English gallopers might be superior in mere speed, but if it came to staying there would be a different story to tell. It is not difficult to understand that England is full of horses of exceptional pace. Even a casual study of breeding will show that such a result was inevitable. ‘As competent authorities at Home have pointed out, much attention has been devoted to the production of short distance performers, and these efforts have not been without success. As an, outcome great sprinters arc common, and the average of genuine stayers has not been maintained. We need not worry about being a little behind the Old Country in speed if we can-still make a boast of the stamina of our racehorses. It is comforting to know that our Manfreds, Heroics and Windbags might still challenge the world from, say, ten furlongs up to two miles, even if they should prove second best in tests over shorter courses. We would not mind being beaten for mere speed if we were not compelled to lag behind when it came to the sturdier qualities encourage and endurance. TROTTING NOTES. . Acceptances for the Kaikoura Trottang Club's meeting will close at nine o clock to-night. * * * * There is a large number of horses now working on the New Brighton track, but the majority of them are young pacers and trotters, who have not yet raced. The regular trainers who use the course have their usual number of horses working on the track.

The Harold Dillon pacer Avenger has improved a good deal during the current season and as he has not been unduly hurried in his preparation he should show further improvement next season. He looks like developing into a really good two-miler. This season Avenger has started in twelve races and has been first, second, third and unplaced an equal number of times. Avenger looks none the worse for his racing and continues to do good work in his training. Although he went his fastest two miles to date when he was beaten by Haunui in the Liverpool Handicap last Saturday, it was not one of his best efforts as regards pacing. Avenger seemed to be boring somewhat and did not go as evenly as usual. Prince Pointer is still enjoying a spell and he will not be put into work again for some time.

The recent racing has brightened up Loganwood, who has been racing well lately. He. gets through his work at the New Brighton track in great style and further successes will probably come his way this season. Logan Wood is a very sound horse and his consistency is one of his chief assets.

Daytime has not done much raring this season but hr is in regular work and he bears a well-trained appearance. He showed plenty of promise at the end of last season. Hi Hfi Charley Bingen, who is a son of Great Bingen, has not proved a success at the pacing gait. Recently he went into R. E. Mills’s stable and that trainer is working the good-looking horse at the trotting gait. Charley Bingen seems more contented when trotting than when working with the hopples, and he may develop into a useful sort. He has only been a few times' oil the track, but he has a good way of doing his work and speed may follow in the future. Escapade, who raced so*well last Saturday against the pacers, being only beaten by- Nimble Direct, should do better next effort, despite the fact that she went better than 4min 30sec for the two miles. She has not had much race experience in the best class races and her recent race should be beneficial to her. Escapade is a contented mare and although she has done some travelling and racing this season she is in great condition and looks none the worse for her exertions. Mac Dillon, in J. D. Smith’s stable, is a useful sort, who is slowly improving. At present he is on the big side. The Brent Locanda gelding Tahoe is now being trained by G. F. Robinson at New Brighton. * Hi '-’fi The trotter Tamerlane is in steady work at New Brighton. He has improved a good deal during the season and is now more than useful. Hi * HrKotuku Jack, who raced well in the North during his last trip, is steadily improving. The brother to Prince Pointer has built up considerably during the season and there seems every prospect of him going on the right way in the future. He is a good pacer, who has plenty of stamina. •HP Hi Hi * Harold Burwood has resumed work at Addington, after a short spell. Harold Burwood is evidently a very hard horse to get to his best form and he is also a moody customer. He will find it hard to again succeed. W. J. Smith is keeping his pacer Sanella well up to her work. The St. Swithin mare is sho\ving improvement and she is particularly good over a distance. sje Hi Hi- * Queen Ida looks none the worse for her recent racing; in fact, the trotter has never looked better. She is best suited to short courses, however, and if there were some mile events for trotters she would take a lot of beating, as she is a wonderful beginner.

P. Riddle is working a sister to his champion Sheik. The youngster, in the meantime, is working at the trotting gait but she is not doing anything but slow jogging. She is a compact, well-built mare.

The three-year-old Peter Fashion is not to be raced again till next season. A. Cox has decided to give him an easy time, as he is a big, overgrown trotter, who should be served by a patient policy. Peter Fashion finished second to Quickfire in the New Zealand Trotting Stakes at Forburv Park last month, but he did not race up to his best form in the contest.

Master Audo is trotting -well in his work and this horse has shown considerable improvement during the season. He has raced solidly and improved in stamina.

Stunt Artist does not look at his best, although he is pacing well in his work. In his race last Saturday he began much faster than usual, but failed to see out the concluding part of the journey.

The big trotter Nellie Hugo continued to train on the right way. She has a very easy action and is particularly clean gaited. Provided she trains on satisfactorily she should win some good races next season. A. Cox has a very high opinion of her ability to develop into a high-class trotter.

There is a movement on foot to restore the amateur events to the Forbury Park Trotting Club's programme. It is to be hoped that those in favour of them will be able to state a very good case before the club’s committee yields to the request.

They say that no one is a prophet in his own country, but there are exceptions to the rule. For instance, Mr R. Caffin has been appointed secretary to the Forbury Park Trotting Club, and it is pleasing to be able to record the fact, says the Dunedin writer, “Sentinel,” because he really held first claim to the position. There is no desire to express parochial ideas, but at the same time if a suitable man can be found in Dunedin to fill responsible positions in the sporting world he should receive more consideration than outsiders.

When the lack of patronage bestowed on the New Zealand Trotting Stakes threatened to delete it from the Forbury Park programme, it was suggested that the race should be converted into a sires’ produce stakes, so that stallion owners could contribute part of the stakes,-and, incidentally, whilst helping themselves, could also help the club and the welfare of the real light harness horse:. There now seems to be a prospect of the Forbury Park classic being converted into a sires’ produce stakes, and it would not lore distinction by the change, but would in all probability gather strength and attractiveness. The proposed alteration would certainly help the club to retain its classic event. NOMINATIONS. BANKS PENINSULA RACING CLUB.
