Exton and W. Cole, secretary. The head master (Mr Ormandy) reported that there were 256 pupils on the roll and that the average attendance was 242. Mr Ormandy stated that the attendances at the swimming classes were quite up to expectations and the progress of the pupils was quite satisfactory. He also expressed his appreciation of the improvements to the school grounds that had been carried out during the holiday recess. The resignation of Miss K. Jarman was received with regret, and it was decided to send a letter of appreciation to Miss Jarman for her past services to the school. The Works Committee reported that the asphalting had been completed under the supervision of Mr I*. D. M’Nab. Accounts amounting to £26 10s were passed for payment in connection with this work, and it was decided to apply to the Education Board for a subsidy on this amount. Mr Cole presented the balance-sheet for the annual picnic, members expressing pleasure at the support of the householders at this year’s picnic. A hearty vote of thanks was accorded Mr Thiele for services rendered in connection with the picnic. It was resolved to have the opening night for this season's, progressive euchre tournaments on Saturday, February 26, and that the function be advertised in the “Star” on Saturday, February 19. The recent handicap competitions resulted as follow:—Men's singles—R. L. Jarman. Ladies’ singles (senior grade)—Miss L. C, Clark; (junior grade)—Miss V. O. Ellis. The second half of the season will commence on March 1. WHARENUI SCHOOL. The Wharenui School reopened with 397 pupils on the roll (which is a record for the school), and an average attendance of 383 for the lirst week and 388 for the second week. At present there are over 400 on the roll. At the end of last year the total w'as 405. This is a very gratifying start when compared -with last year’s 361, and if the average keeps up Wharenui will be permanently advanced in grade 6 and thus be entitled to an extra teacher. WELCOME HOME. Arrangements for the welcome home social to Mr J. Sanders have been completed. The Mayor, Mr Kyle, M.P., has consented to officiate. The growing popularity of the electric pump will provide local authorities with another problem and another outlet for their cash. When a pump is to be installed property-owners are content with a lirst stratum well, and this does not always overflow. So there is no regular flushing water for .side-chan-nels. Presumably the local bodies concerned will have to sink wells of their own for the efficient flushing of sidechannels is one of the first aids to a healthy community. Mr and Mrs J. J. Staples, who have been living at New Brighton for the past three months, have returned to Riecarton, and are living in Ilinau Street.
